if they had a student bank account and a 1k overdraft thats next to no credit history, so it wouldnt have been flagged as a problem. he or she should think themselves lucky, when i left college i had debts of 7k and my mates who went to uni had debts of 15 - 20k
why do you want to blame a mobile network for you relatives mistakes? thats right its always the company giving the credit thats in the wrong, never the person taking it.
why would the fool need or take out 2 contracts that they couldnt afford. no doubt they said they were working when they took them out.

I in no way disagree with your comment that the person involved was foolish and took poor decisions when signing up to the contracts, knowing that he did not have the financial means to make the payments. However, I strongly disagree with your suggestion that the company does not bear any blame. This person was not in employment, had a bank account that barely ticked over and had maxed their overdraft. These facts were irrelevant to the mobile companies and their employees whose sole goal was to sign up more customers, increasing company profits and commission-based salaries, with little regard to how/if payments could be met. Many people in our society are driven by the need to have the latest gadget or at least a cheaper version of what your friends have. The ease with which mobile companies satisfy this need by offering 'easy credit' encourages people to live beyond their means without seriously reflecting on the consequences. In the grand scheme of things, the debts my relative has are small, however for him and his family, the mobile debts would have been non-existent had the mobile companies refused his applications based on insufficient income. There are few morals in business and so I am probably naive to have expected otherwise.

The whole system in that case need to be changed. There's no way the credit check tells and company that someone's back acc overdraft is maxed and has no incoming payments.Nor do you need to tell anyone that you're working.

If that kind of info was available I would think people would then start screaming about invasion of privacy and data protection. . .

My credit history is pretty bleak but i've been accepted by o2 quite recently.

Vodafone oddly let me have a mobile phone & a mobile broadband account when I have a default with them from about 5 years ago...

Orange and T Mobile are going to join don't forget. O2 will not be the biggest fish in the pond anymore.

I have only ever had 1 default which was with 02 about 4 years ago. it was settled within 1 month and my credit rating has improved significantly since then.

Would I still struggle to get a phone through 02? even though I am likely to get on through all the other major networks

O2 are perhaps the hardest to get an acc with.
