What sort of financial checks should or do mobile companies take before allowing someone to set up a contract?

Depends on the company but most if not all would use a company like Experian to check your rating.

i remember Three and then TMobile were easiest to get contracts with when my credit was a little bit 'iffy'
    £4988 Lloyds TSB Mastercard
    £400 O/D Lloyds TSB
    £2650 Lloyds TSB Loan
    £5070 Black Horse Finance

Skint, but I have a plan.... an MSE Plan!!!

P4U or CPW will give almost anyone an acc if they want to make their monthly quota.

An acc crossed my desk from one of them last week for a women whose only proof of ID was her bank statement for an address in the US (from a US bank) !!!! And they give her a contract

What's the best time of the month to try and get an account?
  • Mobile phone companies love to give out new accounts and love to !!!! your credit file up even if you on't do anything wrong.. Because their credit department is run by computers they hate putting anything right as it means they have to do some work themselves.

If you are worried about getting a contract with them as your credit file is a not that great don't go for one as they may make it worse and you also if you get in any trouble with your finances.

If it's a decent phone you are after hit ebay and the like and stick a PAYG simin, top it up £15 or so a month an you can get better deals then those on contracts, wish i ha done that an if you do have trouble with your network you can just stick another sim in your phone.

I really don't know, sorry. I work for one of the network rather than a dealer.

I 'think' each region may have their own cycle.

three are the easiest to get one off if your worried about not passing a credit check. aslong as they can take their £1.95 admin fee you will probably be accepted.
i have a shocking credit rating and i have a mobile and dongle with them.

My credit history is pretty bleak but i've been accepted by o2 quite recently.

Vodafone oddly let me have a mobile phone & a mobile broadband account when I have a default with them from about 5 years ago...
Wondering how to have a life & not rack up more debts...

I was going to ask but might as well post in here.

I have only ever had 1 default which was with 02 about 4 years ago. it was settled within 1 month and my credit rating has improved significantly since then.

Would I still struggle to get a phone through 02? even though I am likely to get on through all the other major networks

    Hi everyone
The reason I asked was because I was appalled at how simple it seemed to be for one of my relatives to get 2 contracts which they simply couldn't pay. This person had a student bank account, did not have a student loan and was only receiving weekly subsistence payments from parents. In addition, they had built up a £1000 bank overdraft over 2 years. As a result of being given these 2 contracts, debts have built up (in addition to having to pay off the overdraft) and family is now having to take over. I can remember when wanting to take out some store cards that the store rang up immediately presumably to check the credit rating before authorising the card. How can mobile companies get away with encouraging reckless debt like this?
