Cheapest Source For Domain Name ?

  • Some ISPs offer free domain names when you take up their other services, such as broadband or dial up. ;)

If you wish to have a free domain name you may be able to save money by switching to any ISP who includes them in their basic package.

Cheapest domain registration that I have found for .com/.net/.co.uk is Registerfly.com (www.registerfly.com) - $6.99 per year ($6.99 for 2 years .co.uk). If you sign up for a free account and get on their mailing list, they have offers getting even cheaper (search on Google and you will find the latest ones).

For Hosting, the cheapest/best value I found is Hosting Unlimited (http://www.hosting-unlimited.net/)- £19.75 for a year for high spec package when bought through Ebay (not on offer at the moment but generally have on offer - log in to ebay.co.uk, go to Advanced Search, Items By Seller then hosting_unlimited). Excellent deal - goes up to £29.95 or thereabouts in year 2 but as the package retails for over £100 on their site, you cannot complain. I have used for over 2 years without a problem.

For all hosts, watch out for the really cheap prices and check the small print - companies sometimes lock you in with the deal (for example, UK2.net are really cheap but if you then want a better deal elsewhere, you have to pay them £20+). This is fine while the prices are cheap, but if they put their prices up then you are stuck. You may also consider if the site has their own banner advertising themselves on your site - fine if you are only using the email service (but check that they do not add a tag line to your emails!) but looks cheap if you are trying to use the website for business (or even personal) purposes. Also, do your homework and decide exactly what you want it for and what functions you need.

I use namecheap.com for the majority of my domains.

They are not the cheapest @ $8.88 for .com/.net/.org but they do have free domain name protection in the first year and they have an excellent control panel for novices and advanced users alike.

I have some domains through GoDaddy.com also but I wouldn't recommend them unless you know what you're doing, their control panel is EVRY convaluted and cluttered.

Be aware that the cost price for UK domains is £5 + vat for 2 years so anyone selling at less than that price eg 1and1 are selling at less than cost!

Look for the addon services now, eg 1and1 mail is a few pounds per month whereas some providers will throw it in for free although they'll have charged you a couple of pounds extra on the domain.

Look for extra charges such as transfer out, tag change or dns change charges. Places like easyspace offer cheap domains but then charge £49 to release the domain to another provider!

Lastly the most expensive part of the whole deal for the ISP is tech support so again paying a little bit more can sometimes get you a better level of tech support should you need it. 123reg have been taking 4 and 5 days to respond to email support recently.

I pay a bit more with domaincity.co.uk but it's worth it.

Can I ask whats wrong with that? I barely notice the links and text which is blended in nicely with the interface. Dont you prefer this in comparison to hotmail with massive flashing banners? I have tried numerous email interfaces even using POP3/Outlook etc and I'm hooked with gmail. I'm on the gmail for your domain beta which means I can use my own domain name ON the gmail interface. I still get ads and I barely notice them. The fact they are "related" links based on the body of text in my email doesn't bother me in the slightest.
I'm glad you don't mind them, I do !! If they start to come through on my emails via OE, then it's goodbye gmail.!! As I've never used hotmail, never had flashing banners etc. but would not put up with them either.
