Tesco.com Grocery Shopping

A word of warning to anyone who uses Tesco's home delivery service for their weekly grocery shopping.
I ordered my weekly shopping from Tesco.com last week and when it was delivered I noticed on the delivery note I had been charged £1.89 for two packs of toilet rolls which were listed as £1.62 on the website and also my order notification. That's a difference of 27p each, over 15%.
I rang the customer services and they pointed out that the price on the internet was a 'guide price' only because store prices vary across the country.
To be fair, it does have a disclaimer on their grocery shopping site, but it crashes your computer when you try t read it, and anyway I think a lot of people would, like me, assume variable pricing applied to weight items like fresh meat, fruit and veg, etc.
What's even more annoying is that you don't know what you have been
charged for an item until it is delivered. The total you get quoted when you enter your payment details is... you guessed it, A GUIDE PRICE ONLY! What's to stop them charging £20 for a loaf of bread?
So be warned!
Needless to say, I won't be using Tesco.com again.
I used to use Ocado, who were great. Good website, polite delivery men, great service. Until one day I ordered about 20 things, 6 of which turned out to be either missing or wrong. I ordered 2 BOGOF chorizo, only 1 turned up, the woman at customer services said as a 'gesture of goodwill' she'd only charge me for one?!
Anybody know of any good grocery home shopping providers?

Thanks for pointing out the problem with Tesco, I must confess I use Tesco online every week. I tried Asda's but they were a nitemare, items were missing and they substituted jars of pasta sauce with bottle of tomato ketchup (4 of them!) hence I stick with Tesco's but will certainly check through my bill more thoroughly!:kisses2:0

I've used Sainsburys for a long time now, and have very rarely had any problems. The pricing is always properly stated before confirming the order, and if, when the delivery is made, other items are substited for items that aren't available, the amounts are refunded very quickly if you prefer to send the substituted items back with the driver. And only once has an item been of particularly poor quality, and an instant refund was given.
The only problem I had on a few occasions was with one particularly unpleasant driver (there's always one!), but my complaints were always instantly responded to, and the person in question sent for corrective training straight away. All the other drivers are fine/very helpful, and orders are always within the time slots, with free delivery Tue-Thur for orders over £70. That's my local experience anyway (North East) ... based on that, I can recommend Sainsburys.0 -
I gave up with Tesco.com over 12 months back now. It seemed a good idea in the beginning as I'm disabled and cannot always get into store but to cut a long long story short and many complaints they stuffed my order up every week which meant i ended up having to ask someone to call at our local ASDA and get the items missing that I'd actually paid Tesco for. They did refund me every time with different excuses but the stress wasn't worth it. Having said that my sis in law uses them now and again for heavy item and bulk buys and has never had a problem, same store too. Maybe they just didn't like me:rotfl:0

I have used Tesco twice and a nighmare both times:
First with a wine order that was not delivered, after a lot of complaints about the lack of communication it finally arrived in a Nissan Micra!
Despite the earlier experience I tried a grocery delivery and you guessed it, it didn't arrive! Tesco decided that the road conditions were too bad to deliver (major town, not the Highlands!), but their store was open 24 hours and they expected staff at work. The greatest annoyance was that despite having email and phone contact numbers we were not informed. Never again!
By contrast, Sainsbury's were delayed due to the road outside their store being closed by an accident and contacted us by phone before the end of the delivery slot to inform us.

I have never used Tesco delivery service, but do they really not tell you the final price until the delivery driver arrives at the door step?
If so I would refer them to Regulation 7(1)(a)(iii) of The Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000:
Information required prior to the conclusion of the contract
7. - (1) Subject to paragraph (4), in good time prior to the conclusion of the contract the supplier shall -
(a) provide to the consumer the following information -
(iii) the price of the goods or services including all taxes;

I go to the shop and have never had any problems
IvanI don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!0 -
I use ASDA
(but am seriously considering Sainsburys after reading
all of the above posts).
I have recently emailed them to ask why they sell products at a higher price than they do instore.
It doesnt seem fair that I have to pay for the goods at a higher price than the instore customer, when I have already coughed up for the privilege of having the item delivered to my door.

But surely seeing as Tesco.com say that if you are not happy with the price charges you can return the items and not pay, then the contract is not concluded until you accept the items?
I have used tesco.com for a year now and have not had one single instance where any problems (which are few) have not been resolved either by the delivery driver or by phone/e-mail.
A lot of it depends on your local store, and i guess in that respect I am lucky.
It's not all bad!!!0 -

The contract would be for the entire order. are you saying that when they turned up with your order of 100 items, if one item was 1p more than the web price you could decline to complete the contract and they could charge you nothing (including any delivery charge as there was no contract).
I can't see Tesco doing this.0 -

Yes that is exactly what you can do. Somewhat shooting yourself in the foot though!0
