  • thanks for the advice, but we really have tried everything - she doesnt really enjoy kongs, will try for about 5 minutes then gives up!

Ropes, toys, cloths, rubber toys dont have effect,. she likes to rip up tennis balls and chewy treats but they only last 2/3 minutes.

Its funny watching her in the park as she will start chewing on tree branches lol

There are some dogs who genuinely don't like Kongs, but dogs who chew and don't like Kongs are rare - how hungry is she when she gets the Kong? How easy/hard is it for her to get the reward from the Kong?

How about a series of cardboard boxes stuffed with newspaper with some smelly treats inside? Like a doggy pass the parcel? There will be some mess to clear up yes, but it will probably keep her busy until she gets tired and falls asleep. IF she isn't too stressed about not being with you. This is where getting a video (if possible) or an audio tape will tell you what she's doing. If she's pacing and fretting, she's worried about being alone. If she's settling down with something and giving it a good chew - she's happy enough being alone and is taking advantage of there being nobody to tell her off/stop her doing it.

  • my girl is always hungry! I did record her a few times when I went out and she just sat there in her crate & howled like a wolf lol

She definately has a thing for wood! she goes mad for a stick/tree! lol

Supersaver 66 even though her humans aren't the same as a pack, you're all the family she's got, so it does sound as if she's stressed on her own and chewing to release endorphines to make her feel more settled. A Dog Appeasing Pheramone defuser (DAP) from your vets may help. You could also look at desensitising her to being on her own - but this will only work if you can arrange that she is never left on her own while you are going through the training period, which could take days/weeks.

How do you know she is howling because she is hungry? Is that what she does when you are there and she is hungry?

hi there. i too have a beagle boy. max is 4. he has never been crated.

he sleeps in the utility room which is the room he also stays in whilst i work. he has a dog flap and has access to our garden at all times. which is designed for his safety. i come home at lunch time and walk him.

he is the laziest beagle on the planet and comes out for a drag occasionally.

i would say dump the crate and make safe a larger area for your dog. and enjoy. beagles are the greatest.

my boy is lying next to me on the chair all curled up and stinking to high heaven but there is nothing better in the whole world.

was thinking about this after i posted last night. i was thinking leaving a beagle or many other breeds in a lounge or other common area whilst you are out is always taking a risk.

my boy is very well behaved but i wouldnt trust him not to get into a scrap with my knitting. or to sit on my sofa or chuck all my cushions off. he can be a right little terror if he chooses.

so i would say definitely in a room where he cant reach or destroy anything.
let us know how you get on x
