My dad turns 50 this year (3 days before christmas) and we are thinking of doing something similar. He has said that he wants experiences rather than presents. Me and mum are going to do one event a month over the next year and put each idea in an envelope to be opened on the first of the month a la ps i love you. Just need to think of all the ideas now. Sorry to hijack your thread just thought I would share my ideaMoved in 12/09 Mortgage 126K0

(just copied these from a crafty website)
Getting Old Kit
Alarm Whistle - for when you've fallen and you can't get up
Magnifying Glass - to help you when you read
Cane (a candy cane will do the trick)
While you were Napping Pad - so you don't miss any messages while you are napping (I made these on the computer also, and then padded them)
Toothpicks - to help prop your eyes open so you don't fall asleep
Rubberband - to give you your flexibility back
Aspirin -for all the new little aches and pains
Pack of seeds * to thank you for helping me grow into what I am today
A clock * thank you for always finding time for me
Battery * to thank you for all the times you never gave up, you kept going and going
Candle * thank you for being my *guiding light*
Tea Bag * so you can sit back and relax once in a while
Fireball * for times when you are burnt out
Eraser * to remind you that everyone makes mistakes. That*s okay, we learn by them
A bag * to help you keep it all together
some of them are a bit cringey, but you could use a few maybe

I did a CD for my husband's 40th earlier this year which contained a song from every year from birth to now. Took a while to do but it's great fun to listen to in the car on long journeysIt's nice to be nutty but's more important to be nice0

I sprained my ankle this summer, rather a long way from shopping, and the only stick I could buy was a real old-lady folding one. I love the idea of recycling it as a silly present!import this0

My children made my mum a book with lots of questions for her birthda. They used black paper and wrote a question on each page in silver pen. They then gave the paper and pen to my mum for her to answer everything....things from 'your favourite colour' to 'did you ever get into trouble at school'. When she'd finished it she handed it back to them and swapped it for her favourite chocolates (bought by my children). We all learnt lots and my mum really enjoyed doing it.0

i did thid for BIL `s 40th and had things like modelling balloons, face mask-hes very much a mans man lol, whistling lolly pops, loads of stupid wee things plus a few good things that were really his pressies
i numbered them all so he had to open them in order-not for any reason just so he knew which number he was on and the fact there were 40
the first few i put in an empty lidded a4 paper box and had 40 candles spelling out 40 on the lid and we lit the candles and carried it through as if it was a cake
he loved it all as did my kids who helped a lot with it they wer e10 at the time
when i priced it all up even though some very cheap things bought still worked out quite pricey but i figured he was worth it
