how can a contract between you and the couple have any standing over a 3rd party in a public place? I understand what you mean about distractions with group shots as they dont always run smooth even without a distraction, but making a contract to that effect sounds rather ott and unenforceable. Telling the happy snapper to wait their turn however sounds totally reasonable.

The contract makes the couple responsible for ensuring that the photographer can actually do their job free from third parties interfering. Of course the photographer will use polite persuasion to request that a guest doesn't impose their presence on a shot but if that person persists it's ultimately down to the couple to sort them out.

Here's one way it can be worded: http://virtualphotographystudio.com/photographyblog/2009/10/20/how-to-handle-too-many-photographers-at-the-wedding/

It rarely gets that far however. I usually get guests to take pics of formals from an angle away from me then swap places with them to keep it all light-hearted.

Hmmm not that i mean to sound nasty but the photographer is being paid for a service...and the guest is there as a guest who happens to want to also take photos. I doubt that the guest will LITERALLY take the same photo and stand directly behind the professional...but if they do, so be it!! A photographer doesn't have rights which prohibit other people from taking photo's in a public place at someones wedding. So really, even if it annoys the photographer, it doesn't matter one jot in my opinion as they are just doing their job and being paid handsomely for it!!

    (sorry if that sounds harsh!!)

One thing to note with this. When one of my friends got married I noticed that in most of the pics taken by the official photographer, people are looking in all different directions (even bridge and groom weren't looking at the same camerat at any given moment).

All the guests will stand behind the photographer taking photos. I'm going to brief anyone involved in the formal line-up shots that if the official photographer is snapping, look at their camera only! Photos look so bad when half the people in them are looking the wrong way compared to everyone else.

Not wanting to get drawn in either, but have to say i think there has been some misunderstanding.

Quote - you would have a valid point if it were one photographer
I wrote, "per photographer", so I guess that makes my point valid.
  • well my friend is a photographer....so she is doing it for us :)

we are getting her and her other half a room for the night before and the night of the wedding, and we are paying her £100 (so prob £250 altogether....the first night is in a b and b in the village)

she will be with us all day

afterwards she is giving me all the photos on disc/usb stick for me to do with as i please

as I do a lot of photoshop work, I will do any editing needed myself...but I like natural shots...and will probably just do a few arty images for fun :)

then if I want anything printed that I cant get done easily/well she is going to sort it out for me and I will just pay for it

only in the sense that you were accurate with timing. That doesnt really make what you were trying to have a niggle at any more valid.

in one minute at a wedding i could take over 20 shots - and they could all be different, so one shot per photographer every 36 seconds is about right when you even it out, its just simply that there will be points when there is a fast succession of rapid changing photos, and other points where shots are being organised and the rate will be slower.

My point was that 800 was what i would assume to be a normal amount for two photographers - and you were angling at the fact that there is no way she would get that many photos or that they would be all the same, - so my point still stands - that you may have a point if it was one photographer - but with two, this would be standard

    Hi,
i am not getting married but on the other side to this, i do 2 packages £700 and £900 you get a cd of images and dvd slideshow as well as prints, the amount depends on the package.
I charge extra for albums the range from £150-£400. Professional albums are not cheap to get made.
I find that people seem to think that the photographer just turns up, takes the pics puts them on disc and that is it. There is a lot of work that goes into it after the wedding, I usually put a minimum of 40-50 hours into my workafter the wedding. My time also goes on meetings with couples and going to locations beforehand that way I am totally prepared for each wedding

    Regards

We're paying £300 for ours. For that we get the full day covered, all images hires on disc with print rights (and he does the editing etc after the day too), an engagement shoot, and a pre shoot of accessories etc if we want it. Also if we want it he does trash the dress shoots and boudoir shoots too, all included in the £300. He's just branching out into weddings which is why he's so cheap.

This is a really useful thread as I am looking for a photographer at the moment too. Is it possible that people could link to their chosen photographer please as I'd like to see their work? Or let me know by PM if that isn't okay? I live in Bath normally so anyone who could travel there would be great, thanks!
