I was told that the NHS only allows white crowns or fillings on front teeth.0

I've got white fillings on my back and front teeth....and I have a HC2 form so don't pay a penny, so that's a lie. Probably dependant on dentist and what they have more like. Am sure some have stopped using amalgam fillings now.** Total debt: £6950.82 ± May NSDs 1/10 **** Fat Bum Shrinking: -7/56lbs **
**SPC 2012 #1498 -£152 and 1499 ***
I do it all because I'm scared.

The NHS pays the dentist to carry out a course of treatment to restore you to dental health. They do not provide funding for cosmetic work or tooth coloured fillings/crown on back teeth. They already under fund for materials as it is without using the more expensive white options. If the dentist choses to provide white crowns and white fillings then its up to them to absorb the increased costs but there is no obligation to provide it. I wouldnt expect the materials to be of the standards that can be made available privately however.0

How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
Hello!
I need to have a crown fitted on my one of my front teeth. In terms of value for money, quality of colour, longevity etc which is best NHS or Private?
I hear NHS ones looks a bit grey?
Does how long it lasts down to having a good dentist or more to do with whether or not you go for NHS and private?
It's important to me that it looks nice as it's at the front and therefore v obvious when I smile.
Any other advice and info greatly appreciated.
Thank you.0 -
It's much more to do with a good dentist who uses a good technician, and has a close working relationship with them with good communication.
There is no such thing as an 'NHS' crown. They don't come out of a box marked 'Crap'.
They're all individually built by a person working to the instructions they've been given.
But the price paid for the item will govern the amount of time that can be spent on it in an environment where people and overheads have to be paid.
I've seen some very good NHS crowns, I've seen some completely crap private ones. But more often, I see NHS crowns that could be better, and nice private ones.

Hello,
Just wondered what people have done as a temporary fix until can get to dentist?
I just had a £300 crown fitted around 2 weeks ago. The tooth has not had a root canal, I just chipped a huge filling and the dentist thought a crown was the best option.
There was slightly pain when he fitted it so he bonded it temporarily just in case I would need a root canal in the future. Nothing was shown up on the x-ray but he got very close to the nerve preparing the tooth and then the slight pain when fitting.
Was eating a starburst when it literally pulled it off the tooth. I placed it back on but its not secure and I won't get to the dentist until next week.
Any advice? I have read fixodent works temporarily but not sure if ok as had no root canal.
