My own stupid fault - be more careful than me!

  • The bed has arrived according to DH. An hour earlier than expected and they dumped it and ran, leaving him to put it together. Further checking of small print reveals not only are they a No-cancellation company, they are also a No-assembly company. Or as I will now term them a No-bloody-good company!

I did look at other beds on their website, but none of them (without spending twice as much) really made it worthwhile trying to change. Plus the bloke was so phenomenally unhelpful that I think it would have just made it worse. I'm sure the bed will be fine. But when you spend that sort of money you want a warm fuzzy feeling or excitement at something new and shiny. Not a sort of sinking feeling that you could have had something better for the same price.

    Ah well.

I ordered a bed at Bensons at the weekend, in store. I wasn't in the best frame of mind, partly owing to the fact that I'd be awake half the night with a bad back because of my old bed! We tried a few beds and found one that was comfortable but when we went to place the order I realised it looked hideous. I said so the saleman and said I thought I might be making a mistake. He was quite aggressive and said that a bed was a functional object not a work of art. True comment, but I don't want to get into a bed I hate every night even if it is comfortable! I let him talk me into ordering it. Now, even though no money has yet changed hands and I don't have the bed yet I cannot cancel the order and say I don't want it. So through my own stupidity I'm stuck with a bed that to start with I just didn't like very much, but now I hate because it reminds me I'm an idiot who should think before she acts!

Don't make the same mistake I did. Say no to a pushy salesman and go away and think about it before you order anything.

And just steer clear of Bensons because they're rude and pushy and their beds are nasty!

I presume it hasn't been delivered yet?

Contact Bensons immediately and cancel. They will probably tell you that you can't cancel. When they say that just tell them that you will contact Trading Standards, as you were pressured into ordering it. For this same reason you should have a cooling off period which I think is 14 days.

Back up everything you say in writing, with CC's to trading standards.

Bensons are well known for refusing to cancel orders, but they are breaking the law.

There is no cooling off period if you order in store, so no law broken.

The only way the OP can now cancel is if the bed is faulty and thus has to be returned.

Now I've been informed they don't assemble it, I shall be buying my bed elsewhere now! Definitely won't be using Benson.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • Pinkshoes is right. I thought I had a cooling off period of 7 days and that I could cancel but I did double-check with Consumer Direct and I was wrong. Different if I'd ordered it online or if the salesman had come to my house.

Just the fact that this thread has put at least two people off using Benson has cheered me up no end!

I used to work for Benson beds and we had customers refuse deliveries and then in that case we cant make them pay, we attempt to deliver again but it can be refused again. Agree with you awful company!
No you're not a vegetarian if you eat any animal or fish, so do not insult genuine veggies by calling yourself one!

Thanks to everyone who posts competitions. You are the stars of the board :T:j:T
  • Just to make you smile - the bed is here and I can live with it. Thinking about the smug salesman still irks me, but my back doesn't hurt anymore and that has to be the main thing!

Small problem though.... the bed was on casters and we have a laminate floor, so every time we sat on it, turned over, made it up, etc. we skidded around the room! Comedy value for a while but then we got bored and took the casters off. At which point I discovered I can't open the divan drawers because they don't have handles and you have to get a purchase on them from beneath! We've left it for now....

You can buy non slip discs to go under these. They also protect the floor from marking. Or you can buy little green felt discs which stick to the bottom of them.

    Thanks again, chaps.
I'll buy a big quilt to cover the ugly divan base

I use different coloured fitted valance sheets that hang down to cover my Divan base and then you cannot see it at all!

Here is an example of one
