It must frustrating for the salesperson to spend time with you when he could be with other customers only for you to make a decision then change your mind at the last second!

That is what salemen deal with all the time.
I normally waste at least 3 salesmans time before I decide on the item, and then it is normally the one who dont speak unless I ask them something that gets my business.

Salesmen will expect a certain number (sometimes most) of their efforts with clients to not result in a sale. You shouldn't think you've wasted their time if you don't buy something, it's all part and parcel of their job.
  • I ordered a bed at Bensons at the weekend, in store. I wasn't in the best frame of mind, partly owing to the fact that I'd be awake half the night with a bad back because of my old bed! We tried a few beds and found one that was comfortable but when we went to place the order I realised it looked hideous. I said so the saleman and said I thought I might be making a mistake. He was quite aggressive and said that a bed was a functional object not a work of art. True comment, but I don't want to get into a bed I hate every night even if it is comfortable! I let him talk me into ordering it. Now, even though no money has yet changed hands and I don't have the bed yet I cannot cancel the order and say I don't want it. So through my own stupidity I'm stuck with a bed that to start with I just didn't like very much, but now I hate because it reminds me I'm an idiot who should think before she acts!

Don't make the same mistake I did. Say no to a pushy salesman and go away and think about it before you order anything.

And just steer clear of Bensons because they're rude and pushy and their beds are nasty!

You complain that you have a bad back because of your old bed, you go to a shop selling beds and try a few out. You then decide that you are going to order a bed to then notice that you don't like how it looks!

You did not mention what sort of bed you ordered, if it was a bed frame that I could understand appearance being important but if its a divan base it would surely be covered in sheets so its appearance would not make any difference. I am just wondering if you got home afterwards and decided that maybe you had spent more than you intended to and are looking for a way to get out of your purchase.

Sales people can be quite aggressive everyone knows that as they need to meet sales targets but at the end of the day you signed the order form - get over it and learn to say no next time.
  • hi there

if it is the same company as i have given the contact details for in my above post check out there terms and conditions

    1. Payment
"Goods" means all or any of the items listed on the invoice. Goods will only be dispatched to you once payment has been received in full (in cleared funds in our bank account) or you have completed an approved credit agreement with our approved credit company.

if you have not ordered the bed on finance or it is not a special order just do not make a payment then your "goods" will not be dispatched to you problem solved;)

on the other hand if it is a special order then it becomes a little more difficult

    2. Special Orders
"Special Orders" means any Goods that are not held in stock by Bensons for Beds or that are ordered and/or manufactured specifically for you. Payment in full is required on Special Orders at the time of your order. An approximate delivery time scale will be provided. Whilst every effort will be made to ensure the estimated dates are met they do not form a fixed term of the contract. Once goods are received at our Home Delivery Centre we will contact you to arrange a delivery date. Special Order items are non-returnable and non-refundable unless there is evidence of a substantial manufacturers fault.

but as you say you have not made payment yet then phone the store back up and say that you have had a look through there terms and conditions and that you no longer want the bed, at the end of the day if you do not want it do not pay for it and certianly do not be bullied into paying for something you do not want

they are very sly though as under cancellations/ refunds it only states

    5. Cancellation/Refunds
We offer a full money back guarantee for items purchased from our website or via the telephone with our Internet Sales Department, excluding all carriage costs, if returned unused in the original packaging within 7 working days following the day of delivery.

    nothing in there about cancellations

keep us updated all the best

Looks like they only added section 5 to comply with the distance selling regulations. Just because they don't dispatch the item if payment hasn't been received doesn't mean you don't have to pay.
  • Thanks again, chaps.

WhiteKnight - I haven't paid more than I expected and in many ways I'm sure the bed will be fine. We did try it out so it will be comfortable (or it better be!!) which is obviously the main concern. It's just not what I expected to buy when I went out and I settled for it because it was the best of a bad choice, rather doing what I ought to have done which is thank the man for his time and leave. I'm cross with myself more than the salesman (although he was pushy and I didn't like him!) but it's a lesson learnt.

Thanks for that info, fishing cinema, but it is on finance and I ordered it in store so I really haven't a leg to stand on. Provided the bed is comfortable, and I said we tried it so it should be, I'll buy a big quilt to cover the ugly divan base and if I still can't stand the headboard I'll take it off and accept it as an expensive lesson. Pound is right - the bed is legally mine whether it's in my house or not.

I only really posted to make myself feel better and to warn others that they shouldn't just buy something and think about it after!

When you expressed your doubts, any decent salesman would have then helped you find an alternative frame that you do like, rather than going for the bully salesman technique.

Sadly many salesmen can't see past the commission cheque, so a customer's needs are ignored!

Is there not a possibility to change the frame for one you DO like?

I would perhaps write to the headquarters pointing out that you are disappointed that <name of sales person> is trained to use bullying techniques to sell rather than listening to what the customer wants. Also point out that you would have still bought a bed from them, but instead came away with a bed that you don't like due to being bullied into buying it, instead of a frame that you actually do like, and because of this you will be recommending to others that they don't buy from Benson*.

    * I'm thinking of getting a new bed soon, and have been looking at a couple from Benson, but I detest bully sales tactics, so might think twice about shopping there now :)
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • Why not just find a bed that you do like and ask to change the order? They still get the sale, you get a better bed, everyone's happy.
  • they're rude and pushy and their beds are nasty!

    .... and comfortable.
