My own stupid fault - be more careful than me!

I ordered a bed at Bensons at the weekend, in store. I wasn't in the best frame of mind, partly owing to the fact that I'd be awake half the night with a bad back because of my old bed! We tried a few beds and found one that was comfortable but when we went to place the order I realised it looked hideous. I said so the saleman and said I thought I might be making a mistake. He was quite aggressive and said that a bed was a functional object not a work of art. True comment, but I don't want to get into a bed I hate every night even if it is comfortable! I let him talk me into ordering it. Now, even though no money has yet changed hands and I don't have the bed yet I cannot cancel the order and say I don't want it. So through my own stupidity I'm stuck with a bed that to start with I just didn't like very much, but now I hate because it reminds me I'm an idiot who should think before she acts!
Don't make the same mistake I did. Say no to a pushy salesman and go away and think about it before you order anything.
And just steer clear of Bensons because they're rude and pushy and their beds are nasty!

I can see both sides here. It must frustrating for the salesperson to spend time with you when he could be with other customers only for you to make a decision then change your mind at the last second!
However for good customer service they should have gritted their teeth and let you make the decision. Have you tried finding their head office number and calling them to complain about the salesperson pushing you into buying the bed? Maybe they can let you cancel or at least order a bed like you more want?0 -
hi there
surely if no money has changed hands yet then you can cancel your order
or there must be a cooling off period?? or failing that just refuse delivery as another poster has said
i can well understand as salesmen can be pushy and i used to tend not to say no but i do now
i have put some links and numbers below so you can try to contact them
all the best

Thank you for your answers. I thought there would be a cooling off period (7 days) but I rang Consumer Direct and they said no. I have already been on to Benson's Customer Service and they just keep telling me I need to deal with the store. The problem with that being that the chap at the store is the bloke who sold me the bed in the first place. He clearly has me pegged as a scatty female who doesn't know her own mind. Which is more annoying cos he's partly right!!
I did say I wouldn't accept delivery. He replied that they would just keep trying or hold the bed for me. Basically whether it's in my possession or not the bed is legally mine and I have to pay for it. Mr Col, I do agree with you in that it must be frustrating for the salesperson, but I did say I was having second thoughts and he brushed them aside. Again, my fault for not sticking to them and not having the strength to walk away.

I think everyone makes these mistakes, like you say you just have to live and learn. I'm fairly IT literate, I do my own repairs on PCs. But Comet somehow persuaded me to spend £30 on a Technical Support addon when I purchased my laptop, I had no use for it at all!0

How are you paying for the bed? you say you haven't paid for it then do what ever you can to cancel what ever payment method you have agreed to pay with. finance/HP, credit card debit card phone your bank and cancel cards or get them to refuse payment.
Don't take delivery of the bed and inform your neighbours just incase they take the delivery for you. If you do take delivery don't unpack the bed or any parts of it, get it returned as it was delivered.
It may be useful if you take a male friend with you and go to the store, tell them you were not happy with the bed when ordered and the sales person forced you in to making the purchase you felt threatened as you were a female on your own and as a result signed any paper work under pressure from the sales person.0 -

Quite possibly the worst advice I have ever seen on here...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

You've bought your bed, now you've got to lie on it."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

I have to agree - the OP has very honestly held their hands up to allowing themselves to be swayed by a salesman, and whilst that's an unfortunate situation, accusing someone of coercion and threatening behaviour (whilst presumably trying to intimidate them yourself with a 'male friend') is unworthy of the OPs honest approach.
I agree with the post suggesting you try to exchange the bed for another one from Benson's that you would be happier with and I hope you manage to get it sorted.0
