We have been considering John Lewis Natural Pocket 2 actually tried in the shop, £375 for a double.
    Still looking around though!

Like both myself and someone else have said in this thread, you won't get good value for money with John Lewis, or any other big brand.

OK Tim, I'm in the market and want a bed and a king size mattress. To give you an example of what I have bought in the past, here is one I bought 10 years ago.

    http://www.alphabeds.co.uk/proddetail.asp?prod=alph012colour (but KS)
    http://www.alphabeds.co.uk/proddetail.asp?prod=pembroke (but KS)

Was very happy with it and would buy again but looking at a lower budget this time. Don't mind a divan but looking for medium term value for money. Don't need credit.

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
My 2p... My personal choice is IKEA - I bought my first one from them about 5 years ago -and it is still perfect. I have recommended them to friends and relatives - and every single one of them went for IKEA too - and are very pleased. I think they have a 10 or 25 year guarantee.
    Couple of bits to note.
    1) IKEA's mattress sizes are a bit different size to UK ones - so you can either buy a new base or .... like i did - just squeeze it in ;) - and it is works fine for us - 5 years in and still going strong. Changing the bedsheets takes 20secs longer - but well worth it ;)
    2) IKEA's cheaper mattresses are rubbish - stay away from them. Go for the top end £300 or so and get one of those "mattress toppers" for a firm mattress that also soft and comfy.
    3) You will have to pick up or pay for delivery
    4) For me IKEA's top end £300 mattress plus topper (£60 i think) - gave a comfort experience equivalent to mattresses costing well over £1000 at other companies mentioned.

We spend nearly a third of our lives in bed... you need a comfy mattress - one that suits your body. So look around and try them out until you are 100% sure. My cup of tea may not be yours...

btw.. i dont work for IKEA or have anything to do with them - i just really like their mattresses
    ;)
  • a note if you do buy a mattress online re my previous post.
if you want to try it once it arrives, leave it in the plastic, this does make it harder to get the real feel of the mattress. You can try it this way and then you return it if you don't like it. you probably will not get a refund for the delivery element.

That only applies if the seller only sticks to distance selling regs. However there are some sellers who offer far more than they are obliged to do by DSR's and give a satisfaction guarantee, allowing you to sleep on the mattress for a few nights. This is the only way to know for sure if the mattress is right for you.

    What make is that mattress?

It doesn't even look the right structure for a pocket sprung mattress.

No idea what make. Came from them and I'd tried the then smaller range out when they had the shop on Tottenham Court Road. Used it for a couple of years and loved it. Very very heavy to turn but a delight to sleep on. I think I paid about £450/550 or thereabouts for a king size in 1999.

Would buy another in a shot but can't quite stretch to the £1000 the bed and mattress cost. Would like to do it for less than half that but can do the mattress and base in two stages. Or I would be equally happy with a divan which was good value for money in the low hundreds if you can recommend how not to get ripped off and some sources. Thanks.

Is that a zip on the side of the mattress? If so it would be interesting to look inside. With pocket sprung mattresses the fabric is actually part of the structure of the mattress. The side stitching combined with the hand tufting help the springs keep their shape, and stop the springs going like dominos. So I can't understand what keep the springs in shape.

Also using a pocket sprung only mattress on a slatted bed with gaps of more than 1" apart can seriously damage pocket springs.

The best way to avoid being ripped off is as follows:
    1. Buy on line from an independent seller who gives a satisfaction guarantee.
    2. If possible use a seller who accepts cash on delivery.
    3. Stay away from big brand names, and go for smaller independent manufacturers.
    4. Avoid gimmicks like pillow tops, and non turn mattresses
    5. Check the sellers return policy to make sure they aren't going to rip you off with a large return fee.
    6. If possible use a seller who delivers using their own transport, so you don't get a courier saying "not my problem mate, we just deliver them".

No, it is not a zip. I'm not able to look at it now but I know there was no way to get into it.

I had it on slats but the slats would be about 4" wide with perhaps 1/2" gap.

It was a very solid mattress and heavy like I said.

I know that we looked into the construction of the mattress quite a lot and what we bought was the best and most expensive they did. Money was no object, within reason, at that time.

Thanks for your guidelines. The thing is just how can you tell who is an independent manufacturer ? The whole business, like much of furniture, seems to be full of spivs and even the big players such as John Lewis are accused of re-branding cheap merchandise as their own.

I used Alphabeds but they closed the shop in TCR and are now only in Wales, though I'd use them based on experience. However, I'd like to use someone where I can go and see the product in London and not some crappy store on the market !

I found these guys in North London. Is this the type of thing you mean or is this still factoring in too much profit for the firm and we should go further up the supply chain ?
