Unemployment FALLS this month!!!!!!!

Great news for once....

Unemployment fell by 1000 people between July and August, according to Sky News. (I know, its still high, and it's a small fall, but still great news)

The number of redundancies also fell over the previous quarter, whilst the number of vacancies remained the same.

Hopefully we can all agree this is great news.

  • Oh Hamish, if you can massage figures like that ...
  • 'Unemployment increased 88,000 to 2.47 million in the three months to August, from the three months to May. The jobless rate rose to 7.9% from 7.6%.'..BBC. Oh dear Sky news wrong again. How can an increase be 'great news'. I'm sure you are being sarcastic.

I'm sure you realise the difference between quarterly and monthly statistics?

In the 3 months to august's cumulative total, unemployment rose.

In the last of those three months, from july to august, it fell.

So simple, even an idiot could understand it.

Remind me again why you couldn't?

  • Well its a high number alright, heading for the 3m number that was hung around Thatcher's neck.

But them again, its below the EU average and its less than half the rate in Spain. You do have to wonder what we're doing right here that others are doing wrong.

Or at least you do if you're not a Brown-frother still pretending that this isn't a global crash

IF this is true it would be fantastic.

    Meh.... details.:rotfl:

Last month available, if it makes you feel better.

And it's still a remarkable development.

How many of those bears rubbing their hands in glee at the prospective demise of the economy and gloating over unemployment rising at 100K a month back in January, would have believed it would fall by 1000 people in August?

Not a single one I'd wager.

  • Employment should be increasing as Christmas approaches, so the number of unemployed should be falling over the next 3 months.
Although 1000 more employed people in a population of 75million isn't really worthy of 7 exclamation points.
