New tv-will box still work?

Need to pick your brilliant techie brains, if I may!:D

Fingers crossed, we should have a new lcd tv by the weekend!:j

Problem is, our set up at the mo is crt tv, PS2, Thompson digital recorder & vcr.

AFAIK, the new telly has built in freeview so I'm thinking we can't use the Thompson box anymore...am I right?

Also, know idea if it has scarts which will be a problem if it hasn't-anyways around that?

All advice appreciated!:D

Thomson Digital Recorder:- Will need Model No go give precise advice. Does it have an analogue receiver or a digital freeview, or both? If it has digital then you can continue to use it after the analogue switchoff.
Would expect a digital recorder to have at least a scart if not HDMI.

VCR:- Most probably has analogue receiver. So no use after analogue switchoff (without buying a freeview set-top box and connecting it to VCR.

New Freeview TV:- Assuming is is at least HD Ready, if not Full HD. Should have 1 or 2 scarts as well as HDMI. Info on model will enable exact details to be found.

    Hope that helps.

Agree with the above - you shouldn't have any problems using all your current stuff up until the analogue switchoff - as long as the new TV has the right connections to match your current kit ...something you should check before you order it !

SCART and Hdmi signals are completely different so there is no "converter" or adapter you can buy (as far as I know)

Thomson box can be used via SCART and can probably work through VCR too (although no real need as Thomson records anayway). VCR will work fine as a player, again via SCART if you want to watch old videos. I'm not a gamer so don't know what connections a PS2 uses, but I suspect she'll be fine. The built in Freeview can be used if the Thomson is tied up recording other stuff.

Yes, there are several, but they start about £70 so not really practical for an old VCR.

I was thinking of this sort of thing RiK, but I'm sure I've seen them cheaper.

I have to question the quailty of them that are so cheap personally

Also im dubious as to how useful it is. Its only useful if you have no scart connection on the tv really
That cheap one doesnt mention RGB either which could mean its no better than connecting via a simple video cable
Then once its converted to 720 (Using a presumably very poor scaler/converter) , no tv IS 720 which would mean it needs scaling AGAIN!

Personally, I can't really see a need for it at all. I was just pointing out that such adaptors do exist, should anyone have a need. I'd expect the quality to be decidedly ropey. ;)
