Just one other small thing, what version of XP do you have? Home, or Professional? (or MCE)
- Nukey
Also, time for another registry fix!(let's get professional
)
Browse to this key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SOFTWARE
Microsoft
Windows
CurrentVersion
policies
Explorer
On the Explorer directory double click NoCDBurning and set it to 1, and press Enter.
Restart and check to see if the recording tab is there.
If not, you may need to uninstall and reinstall the burning software (but before reisntalling, check for that recording tab).
Also, when you put a disc in the drive and right click it, is there an option to format? Or are you using CDburnerXP to burn your media?

'Home' version.

Mmmm, registry change and uninstalling burner makes no difference.
No option to format when right-clicking.
Haven't used CDBurner to burn media (as far as I know). Normally just right-click on Word document and "send to" disc (but no option to do that at present).
Already looked at the Microsoft Support doc. and got so confused, I gave up

Ok, I'll explain...
Browse to here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Software
Microsoft
Windows
CurrentVersion
Explorer
CD Burning
Drives
You will see within the Drives branch something that says:
Volume{87233ec2... etc. etc. (The specific number will be different, but there should only be one drive there).
Click that.
Double click Drive Type and change this to 2, then press Enter, and restart.
Let me know how you get on, and whether you see the tab then.
If this makes no difference then try changing it to 3 - that may solve it.
Also, you may want to temporarily uninstall that burning software.

Thanks Nukey ... I've got to do a few things, so will have a go later and let you know how I get on.

Hi Nukey,
Drive was already set at 3, I set to 2 (and then 1), rebooted each time and still no difference.
Burning software still uninstalled.
This is a snap-shot of what I get up when right-clicking on E drive (no mention of recording anywhere). If I hit the "Hardware" tab (see below), there's a Samsung disk drive listed and the TSSTcorp DVD/CD-ROM drive also.Wins since 2009 = £17,600MANY THANKS TO ALL OPS0 -
Sorry I didn't reply sooner.
Would you be able to try logging off and logging back in as an administrator please? (At the welcome screen do Ctrl+Alt+Del twice, in the user type Administrator and in the password box type in the password if you remember setting one). If you don't ever remember setting a password just leave it blank. Can you check in there to see if recording is available?

Nukey,
Please don't apologise for not replying sooner ... you have a life and I really appreciate you helping me
OK, logged on as Administrator (had to go into Safe Mode first) and just the same as before I'm afraid.

Ok
What I would like you to try now is to see if the burning service is active.
Can you please hold the Windows flag button and the letter R together and let go, this should then bring up the run box.
In the Run box can you type in:
services.msc
...and then press Enter. Then maximise the screen.
We are looking for something in this list - the list should be alphabetical, so should be easy to find.
We are looking for "IMAPI CD-Burning" in the list.
You will need to double click this, then click the dropdown box next to Startup type, and select Automatic. Then click the Start button under where it says "Service status:".
Is the tab there now?
But anyway, I do this kind of thing at work, (working for a certain company's software support helpline - no names will be mentioned) - and had many people call about this type of problem. It gives me something to do when not on the phone to someoneI'm sure we'll get there eventually though.
