Help - p.c. won't read CD's/DVD's!

Hi all,
My 3 year old Dell (Windows XP) has stopped "reading" anything from the CD/DVD drive. It opens/flashes as normal, but then nothing. I don't know when this started to happen as I've not used a disk for ages, but it has worked OK in the past.
I've been into Device Manager and under DVD/CD-ROM Drives is TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-H553A, but this has an exclamation mark to the left of it, so something's obviously awry. I've switched the p.c. off and on again and it's relocated the TSST drive, but the problem is still there.
I don't think there's any point in trying System Restore (?) as I've no idea when this started to happen.
Any ideas to help get this working again would be greatly appreciated (bearing in mind I'm not very good with computers
).
Cheers,
Mimi

Have you opened the case up and taken a look? The cable connecting the drive to the motherboard may have disconnected or come a little loose.0

I am having a similar issue with drive myself same company Samsung TSSTcorp DVD+-RW (cant recall model no) Bought end of August 08
Starting playing up copying some data and wouldn't verify. It wont read discs now either (sata power connections fine) I contacted Samsung and said drive is faulty its just over 12 months old0 -
if it was me I would remove the drivers in control panel/device manager and DVD/cdrom and uninstall, and reboot and hopefully it will find drivers again usually works
The one drive I have below isnt one playing up its on another pc0 -
Hey,
- Open Start > Run
- Type in REGEDIT, press Enter
- Maximise the window, make the left pane a bit bigger (looks way narrow!)
- Click the + or the arrow next to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
System
CurrentControlSet
Control
Class
Click on (not expand) {4D36E965.......
- Right click UpperFilters, select Delete
- Confirm
- Right click LowerFilters, select Delete
- Confirm
- Close the registry editor
- Restart the machine
DVD drive should then appear
If it doesn't then please can you double click the DVD drive in Device Manager and then tell me what the Code number is?
Thanks

Hi,
Thanks to all.
There are 3 x lots of Upper Filters : Upper Filters/Upper Filters_1 and Upper Filters_2 ... should I delete all of these?

You will be best off getting rid of all Upper and Lower filters.
They are more of a hinderance than anything.
Now you say you have so many, I'm feeling a lot more confident that this will solve it.
I'll make you into a pro at this kind of thing. Before you know it, you'll be hacking into Barclay's Bank by next week!

Just realised that I can't seem to record onto a disk now (though CD music disks playing fine).
Getting a message 'E' Not Accessible, Incorrect Function. There's nothing to click onto in Properties to enable recording, just General/Auto Play and Hardware sections, so I'm stuck
Can anyone help me to get the p.c. to recognise a disk as recordable?
Cheers,
