I have a degree and working at cinema. We're all struggling to find jobs at the minute. Just make sure you leave time for job searching when you're working there so you don't get stuck. I had that problem and I've had 1 interview since i started back in February.

Its coming to something when a 26 yo person feels "ashamed" for getting a job at Mcdonalds!

We are in the midst of a recession.
    The dole queue is long.
    Jobs are scarce.
You have been knocked back by plenty of others.

If people are going to be ashamed for getting money, it should be those on benefits, not those working.

In my opinion you are a class above if you accept work where you can get it.

This jobs fits in with family childcare commitments, pays at least NMW.

    Whats the problem?!?!

    Good luck.

Im sure theres going to be people older than yourself there so they wont talk about you, you shouldn't feel ashamed as your doing what is required to provide for your family,
  • Just interested what went wrong after you got your law degree? Have you tried doing Will writing work? There are lots of opportunities, even on self employed basis if you look up on the internet. I've got a friend doing without a law degree and doing quite well out of it.

You might be able to fit in around your family commitments.
  • I can beat that - I've been turned down by McDonalds 3 times,lol.

Seriously OP, if you get the job, go for it - a job's a job at the mo.

just recieved an email saying l been selected for an OJE Interview.... the thing is im not 15/16 but 26, l feel like a right idiot applying and working amongst teenagers!!! they are all gonna talk about how old l am and working at Mcdonalds!!! it makes me cringe.
the only thing is the morning shift is perfect for me and its close to home and l can easily work without having to pay for childcare....
so what do l do??? and what can l expect from an OJE interview its making me all nervous...
    HELP ;(

It will be fine. At the end of the day you are going out and earning your crust. There is a lot to be said for that. So what if you job is in mcdonalds. There are worse jobs!
When dealing with the CSA its important to note that it is commonly accepted as unfit for purpose, and by default this also means the staff are unfit for purpose.

I only left McDonalds for my current job about three weeks ago and sometimes I miss the place!

If you go to your local McDonalds or any other fast food restaurant you will see people with a wide range of ethnicities, religions, education level and indeed age, so I can't see anybody treating you differently because you are 26.

By the way, at our store ages ranged from 16 to around 60.
  • Don't feel bad for not getting into a Law Firm. I work for one and jobs are scarce for fee earning staff at the moment. If you do eventually want to work as a lawyer, take any job you can and think about getting your LPC which as you know will get you your training contract when they start taking on again. I applied for McDonald's when I was desperately needing work and they turned me down! So you must be doing something right :-)
  • Do you actually get more money from that job though (after tavelling expenses),
than you would get on JSA + LHA + No Council tax bills??

And if so, is the difference in extra amount of money you get worth doing that sorta job??

If you think it is then go for it. :)

Just to reiterate what everyone else has said - you have absolutely nothing to feel ashamed of! There are too many people out there who are too proud to accept a job that they think is 'below' them. As I see it, how can any job be 'below' standing in line at the JobCentre? I'm lucky to be in a decent job now, but in the past I have done crappy jobs and I've also stood in line at the JobCentre. I know which one made me feel better.

Hold your head high, you are looking after yourself and your family, and that is something to be proud of. Good luck!
