Replacement for O2 XDAIIi PDA
I've enjoyed the XDAIIi but WinMob 2003 is getting too long in the tooth now.
Can anyone suggest a modern replacement unlocked PDA available in the UK for use with an existing O2 SIM? I get a cheap corporate rate for the latter.
I like the 3.5" screen, the app multitasking and the stylus rather than a purely touch screen as I do a lot of word processing (lyric writing with Word, rhyming dictionaries, thesaurus etc.)
Doubling as a GPS navigator would be great too.
Something like the iPhone would be fun but it strikes me as too fiddly to do the amount of typing I do and I'm sure the cost of all those must-have apps and data mount up.
The newer XDAs only have a 2.8" screen. The Palm Pre does true multitasking I believe but I understand that there aren't a lot of apps so far.
Thanks for any suggestions...

I had the XDA ll and the XDA Exec, both great PDA's..........but not a patch on the iPhone, if you like the XDA you will love the iPhone, trust me it is fantastic.

Get on the XDA developers forum and get a WM6.1 or 6.5 ROM installed, really easy to do.
For a new phone, HTC Touch HD (1 or 2) is the ideal replacement, or the HTC Touch Pro (1 or 2) is smaller but has a qwerty keyboard.0 -

I am tempted but not yet convinced.
Shame the TomTom car kit is delayed again. I need something like that by 30th October.
When I tried it the other day it seemed pretty slow surfing too. I switch graphics off on the XDA but there probably isn't an option for that on the iP.0 -

I go there quite frequently and I thought the conclusion was that the XDAIIi cannot be upgraded beyond WM2003?For a new phone, HTC Touch HD (1 or 2) is the ideal replacement
Looks nice. Pretty pricey option too, unfortunately.0 -

I know the XDA IIs can be upgraded to WM6.1 (used to have one, great phone), I thought the XDA IIi was actually more powerful so should handle it? I'd personally give it a go if your confident enough to do a ROM update, if it's too slow you can always swap back.
If you want a big screen and can't afford the touch HD, I think you've already get the next best thing.0 -

I got the IIi because I wanted the power more than the slideout keyboard. The IIs can be upgraded but the IIi not. Strange but true.
I'm veering towards the iPhone at the moment...0 -
Well I still haven't replaced the XDA IIi, even though it died.
Every time I look at the reviews of apps I might want to get, the things don't seem to work - Documents To Go for Word editing, Tomeraider, Some aspects of e-Reader, syncing files to a PC, plus I'm not convinced I'll ever get used to typing accurately on a touchscreen as opposed to with a stylus.
Can anyone recommend a good writer's app for the iPhone and reassure me that I would be able to multitask with the e-Reader Rhyming Dictionary (or even be able to load my existing e-books onto the iPhone from PC)?
Is Android any better?0 -
I suggest you go for the HTC Touch Pro 2. I had the HTC Kaiser for more than 3 years and have recently changed to the Touch Pro 2 . Check out reviews on gsmarena.com and of course xda developers.

Not a bad thought and one that has occurred to me too. It's a bit lacking in modern apps though I would imagine. I'll check.
I like the resistive screen and it can do Flash video.
The iPhone is probably OK for typing but correcting the mistakes seems like a nightmare. Might be my ideal phone if it had a stylus, or did Flash, or proper word-processing.0 -
Consider watching Brandon Miniman on PocketNow Videos on YouTube. He is knowledgeable in the field, and does some quite informative videos imo
