A 2 litre TDCI Mondeo (the 130 6 speed one) will get 45 MPG even when getting booted, has a better 0-60 time than it's petrol equivilent, will hit an indicated 130mph on the speedo and will pull like a train.
Most of the hot hatches mentioned wont get 35mpg unless you drive them like a nun which defeats the purpose of all the talk of BHP.0 -
But it's no hot hatch is it? A low powered family saloon is never going to be as much fun as a car purposly designed for fun and speed.
Diesels have come a long way, I even had a 335d for a while when I was doing high miles but even though it was far faster it was never as much fun as the far less powerful and petrol 182 that was built for fun.
I feel that saying a low powered mondeo is nippy and pulls like a train is more subjective. If you drive something built with perforence in mind you'll realise it doesn't!0 -
Going to do some research first but I am possibly considering A3 2.0 TDI(140ps), Golf 2.0 GT TDI(140ps) or Leon Cupra FR(02-05)."He's a maniac, maniac that's for sure,

ive had a shot in an a3 2.0 tdi and its nothing special.and the guy that owns it has had nothing but problems with it.
go rear wheel drive for some real fun and real power....work permit granted!0 -

It sure aint, thats why I have a motorbike.
I suppose as you get older, your priorities change. I've always preferred comfort though and like my toys these days.0 -

Hmm, i think i need to take a step back and decide what i really want, power or economy. One half of me is saying go for CTR/LCR but then people are saying that I will get no where near 30mpg.
Decisions decisions........."He's a maniac, maniac that's for sure,

Diesels can be quick! As the heavy-footed driver of a 1.4 diesel yaris (old shape) i can proudly say i have burnt off many a boy racer at the lights, and sit quite happily in the fast lane on the M6 at speeds which would normally cost me my licence. The joy of turbo diesels is low-rev torque!!!
I was always a petrol head, diesels were for old farts to tootle to the shops, but after owing one and having a very nice mechanic friend who keeps it tuned to sound like a fat harley davidson i doubt i'll ever go back to petrol! And the best bit is, despite driving like a nutjob most of the time, i still get 55mpg without even trying
If i was in your shoes I'd go for the Leon!Debt@LBM1=£4050 1st DFD 27/08/09Debt @LBM2 =£14,469.97 2nd DFD 14/03/2018 :T

Erm I have an additional 1.5k for insurance thats not included ..already got a quote for CTR and its come to £1100 so the others wont be much difference.
I assume by your quote you are about 22/23?
or a little bit older in a high risk area?
Be aware that most of the major insurance companies don't like modifications (re-map) and if they did, would unlikely consider it if you are under 25.
£6K for a 140 Audi or Golf is a big ask.0 -
If you remap yor not going to get 50mpg! try more in the region of 35mpg, thrash a high powered diesel and you wont get anything near quoted.0
