Can you change a wheel?

I hate it when men assume that I can't change a tyre, I just politely refuse there help and tell them that I'm an aircraft mechanic. They soon slunk back to where they came from!I haven't got one!0

Wouldn't have a clue so I would call my husband or the RAC.0

The only problem with calling RAC/AA etc, you are only allowed so many call outs on most policies, and to waste a call out on a flat tyre. Maybe a kind Policeman will do it for you, thats if you can get one to stop for you;) .0

My maintenance contract on my car covers roadside tyre changes, last time I needed a tyre change I couldn't physically lift the spare out of the boot it was too deep and too heavy and the position of the car was too dangerous to try to do it myself. I do know how to and in a safe place I could do it but I would not put myself in danger to save face.0

You mean change a wheel! Changing a tyre is very difficult and you can't DIY. Changing a wheel, conversely, is relatively simple and my wife can do it as well as I can.

Two weeks ago we purchased a 3yr old Merc C200 for my wife to drive. The guy who sold it to us mentioned that the car was covered with Mercs 30 year breakdown gaurantee, anyway I did not take much notice and anyway i guessed there would be so many clauses that you it would be of no p[ractical use.
Anyway the weeks following my wife is 30 miles from home when the rear tyre gets a puncture on a main A road (A38 Deby). Calls me at work - but as I travel in by train I cant get away quickly.
So its rainning on a busy road and the wife trying to change the wheel, but can't get the wheel nuts off - when I remember the 30 yr cover. I do a search on yell.com and provide her with the nearest Merc garage.
Merc could not be more helpfull. Told my wife that a lady on her own and in distress constituted a "breakdown". Took details and told her to wait in the car with doors locked, called back after 5 minutes and provided details of the breakdown garage that would attend and said that when the breakdown truck arriived they would call her again to confirm the company, reg and drivers name - only then should she leave the car.
My wife was on her way in 30 mins and not a penny charge!
So the moral is if you do not have a merc make sure you can get the wheel off or you have suitable tools to help you.No Links in Signatures by Site Rules - MSE Forum Team 20 -
