I had to change a tyre today which I've had to do before, but I was wondering how many people can actually change one? What do you do if you can't or don't want to change it, who does it and how much does it cost?

I am a lorry driver, and I think everyone should be able to change a tyre on there own these days. I myself, would not want to be on the hard shoulder longer than I had too. I even think it should be part of the driving test now, maybe it is as I pass my test so long ago?.

If you are on the motorway, get as far to the grass verge as you can, keep away from the motorway. Check your spare tyre is not flat and you have a jack and brace. If you have a passenger let them keep an eye on on-coming traffic. Undo your wheel nuts "one turn only" put your jack on the jacking point on your car, jack the car up. undo all the nuts, take your wheel off, and place it under your car near your jack, just in case your jack falls. Put your spare tyre on, put two nuts oposite each other back on and tighten, this will make sure you wheel is straight. Then put all the other nuts back on. Put the flat tyre back in your boot and lower your jack and put it away. Then re-tighten your nuts, and don't foget to get you tyre repaired and replace it on your car. that wasn't to hard now, was it:rolleyes: .

No sounds easy, but you forget to take into account the possible harsh weather, trucks thundering by inches from you, laying/kneeling down with your !!! sticking out onto the road etc...... Very scary for anyone never mind young ladies.

With so many people signed up to breakdown companies i always advise my wife should she get a flat/break down etc either stay in the car or preferably get out and stand on the grass away from the road and car and call for assistance. Let them come and sort it!!

In fact my policy says someone will be there within the hour and the other week we were getting ready to go out an i noticed the car had a flat. I couldn't be arsed changing the tyre or running the risk of getting dirty, so i made the wife phone the break down company to come out and change the tyre (well a man couldn't call another man to come and change a tyre!)

I'm with you Ivry - call someone who can. I am pretty sure I could figure it out )I was taught how many moons ago!) but I'm not sure if I would want to, especially on a country lane or the mw. IMHO that's why I have cover :O)

A couiple of years back my car battery died an untimely death. The very kind RAC man not only told me what to buy and where, he also told me to call the RAC again the next morning and someone duly came out and fit the new one for me. I have great appreciation for the service.

I was a tyre fitter for a year and changed tyres on everything from quadbikes to cars through to farm equipment and lorries. Never actually had to change one on my own car at roadside though thankfully. :p

I'm glad that I can do something about it rather than just sit there waiting for breakdown companies.

Thanks for the tips owey, wouldn't have thought of putting tyre under car in case jack fails.
