I really don't like the sound of this, I know that there are postal strikes, but all my expected mail is getting through - on time. You say they allege that the paperwork has been lost in the post three times? Once is chance, twice is coincidence, three times is enemy action! I don't believe that they ever sent anything.

This company seems at best very disorganised and at worst very dodgy. It is possible that they had second thoughts about the offer that they made you, and don't want to say so outright. They are just stringing you along. This has been going on since June? You may have had a lucky escape. Even if they are just inefficient, do you want to work for such people?

If they can't afford an office, no matter how small, can they afford to pay you?

As others have said, just learn from experience and never hand in your notice until you have a genuine, formal offer on headed paper with starting date, salary etc. Also, when dealing with a company that is unknown to you, get as much information about them as possible before approaching them. They may be registered at Companies House, but this in itself does not mean that they are right for you.

henrygregory - current appointments will give you current directors - which may be useful, but its the accounts you really want to see a) to see if they are up to date and b) to see how solvent they are.

  • Thank you so much for your comments and help guys. I have not had time to check on companies house yet. I am due to start with these people tomorrow. I called them today to find out what on earth is going on. They gave excuse after excuse, blaming a postal strike last week, even though there wasn’t one, then blamed it on the fact they had no envelopes to send me the contract to then blaming colleagues. I am fuming. I know over the weeks I have been getting more and more signs these lot are a bunch of liars and fakes, but to insult me with such rubbish excuses.

My at the time current employer said they would be able to offer me a little extra work if things turned sour, however they can't do so at the moment. As of tomorrow I am out of work. I just can't believe people can get away with this.

Any advice? Should I check if they are solvent and then start with legal proceedings? If so do I claim for each day from tomorrow they have not employed or paid me?

This kind of stuff really should not be allowed.
I wanted to move job to get a little more experience and try a new place. I had finished my degree and thought it would be a good time to try something fresh. Instead I have been well and truly had and now have no respect for employment.
  • Hello, I wondered how things had turned out. I thought that perhaps as you had asked them to wait a week to see how your other applications went, they had decided to offer the job to someone else but did not want to tell you.

Their excuses are so feeble I can't imagine what they are like with their clients.

Considering that you only heard about starting tomorrow when you phoned them, it all looks very bad.

Sometimes libraries have subscriptions to online services, some references libs specialise in business so perhaps they could help check the solvency.

:rotfl: Now that's a new one.

Advice? Think yourself lucky, imagine what working there must be like!

But the thought of being unemployed with nothing to do all day does not make me feel to good.

This will make you laugh, I have just switched on my phone and there in my inbox is a TEXT MESSAGE sent late last night with directions of where I should go today from the director!
Call me old fashioned even though I am not old fashioned and have only just finished my degree, but correspondence with your employer via text message? Don't think so! How ridiculously unprofessional is that?!

So, are you going or not?

Perhaps they think it is the 'new' way of doing business.

This is the worst way of business I have ever come across. I am just shocked people are allowed to operate like this. There was no mention of this during the job interview. Unfortunately, and obviously, really; by the time I had read the message this morning, the meeting time had passed. What does the guy expect when he is texting very late on Monday night.

I wonder if he thought I would be up all night waiting to hear from him.
I have checked my phone and have more text messages and voicemails from him wondering why I did not show up and asking if I could call him back?!

Shouldn't laugh because I need a job, and 5 other poor people have to work with this guy.

  • Perhaps the universe is trying to tell you something i.e. forget them.

What exactly does this company do?

I agree - I'd be tempted to text back asking if he would like you to arrange some admin support as they obviously need it.
