O2 do that friends and family deal. His GF can get 4 free sims and give him one. If he tops up £15 a month he can have unlimited O2 to O2 texts and minutes so they will always be able to get in touch. I know it's £5 more but may be worth it.

He probably can get his existing phone unlocked for a couple of pounds if he needs to. Google unlocking phones.

If both parties have a good internet connection - then Webcam is the way to go.

Can both see and hear each other as you said it was after revision - so within the house, don't need mobiles.

As mentioned above, purchase 2 PAYG 3 phones and use skype on them. No top up or monthly charges. You just pay for the phone and thats it.

Yes the Customer Services is bad, but you're not paying for anything except the phone. Its a win win.

that would normally be the case greyster but signal keeps dropping where we live (deepest darkest Dorset), so part of the the reason that we are moving away.

for others that get a good signal then it sounds the perfect option, well done;)

Good advice pir but have stated limit for him at £10 per month (he pays £5 and us also), so unless he wants to add the extra £5 (pulling out teeth easier), then he won't budge. We have added the £5 as a safety blanket so we can get in touch with him.

It may be the best deal. £10 will go very quickly with texts and minutes especially when if they continue to have different providers.

Check out the o2 free sim link as the mim is £10 but you get a better deal with £15. So he could use it with £10 and if he needs more he can use put the extra £5 on to get completely unlimited O2.

When his GF orders the sims she will have to decide which type she wants. I think the unlimited talking and texting O2 to O2 would be the best for him.
