Royal Mail national strike looms for Christmas

however the pensions deficit came about as RM took payment holidays year on year since they were making profits year on year.
its not like it just popped up0 -
you seem to miss my point
we have and are being told(by the fact the software says so) the the duties like mine are achievable within the 8 hour day.
after all RM like to use the line we just want our workers to work the hours they are paid
look at the times
so do i bring mail back? leave out the businesses? work over for free? take the 3rd degree every day over why i cant complete my duty in the time?
so whats the answer given we have done exactly what RM wanted to the letter(no pun) as an office.
See I am in the private sector and the money I earn is not dependant on the hours I do I regularly do 2 hours a day more than my contracted hours.
I don't love my job but I do like having one and the money it brings in.
Perhaps you should ask a UK mail delivery person what they do.

I have our stack of Christmas cards here, perhaps I should send them now...or just not send any this year.0

you are talking to somone who worked as a chef for over 15 years in fine dining
if you want to get in a !!!!ing contest over working extra hours i will win
my point is if RM want to use the fact workers should work all the hours they are paid then it should be achievable in that time.
they expect this to be done in 8 hours.
they cant have it both ways.
i do the job for my wages pure and simple. thats £341.10 before deductions though RM would have you believe i somehow magic a lot more than that every week
i work hard and will do whats required for my contract.
however when im told on a daily basis how quiet it is and how my duty must be achievable and im just not trying
well thats not on for me.
you see the 'old' system in RM was if you got done early then you were done.
this was brought in by RM when they brought in one delivery
so workers were coming in early, not taking breaks, using their own cars for delivery
the job got done and everyone was relativly happy.
RM now say when you are done we want you to do X extra or whatever
so why would you go in early?
why wouldnt you take your break?
why would you use your own car?
so now RM are reaping the results of a change in policy(by them) and a slow change in mindset by posties
as for your link to uk mail,i dont see your point?
why not ask all 30 http://www.psc.gov.uk/licensed-postal-operators.html
when did your UK mail postie deliver today?0 -
Although I have some sympathy with the Royal Mail workers I dont see what the strikes will acheive. Losing big contracts like the Amazon one can only result in more job losses. Times are hard for all industries and going on strike is going to make things worse with the resultant loss of business.0

?
Your argument would hold a lot more weight if it wasn't for the lovely photo in the press last week showing two posties letter carts sitting on the pavement outside (unguarded by the way) a betting office, while our incredibly hard-pressed posties (god bless em) were inside whiling away their working day betting on the horses.
Oh, the cheeky chappies.0 -

No where they pay RM for the mail. But how many small parcels did they deliver. (DX did though
)
RM have competitors, I would not be so blinkered if I were working for RM to think other postal operators and couriers are irrelevant (Amazon seem to think they are not.)
People do not just stop sending things just because they do not deal with RM any more.0 -

Precisely. The postal workers and their union have a laughably overstated sense of their importance. Going out on strike at Christmas? Who will really care? Seriously, these throwbacks seem to think they're still living in the 1970s when such strikes had an impact.
Today, they are nothing.0 -
The strike is on it seems.
Lots of small business will suffer with people losing their jobs as a result.0 -

Just because you personally don't use the post much, it doesn't mean it's irrelevant for the rest of the world. In my job I use a courier for urgent and large items, but RM for quite a lot of routine things- expense claims for those not based on site for example. The recent strikes in London have caused problematic delays especially for small businesses who can't afford to do everything by courier. They are an EYESORES!!!!0
