I guess that is why they have just lost a big contract with amazon.co.uk

It's a good guess, but also the first line of the OP's post.:D

Royal Mail was on last night reported to have lost a £25 million contract with Amazon, its second largest customer, as a national strike looms over the crucial Christmas period.

"Sack anyone who strikes, there are plenty who want jobs out there"

What a lousy comment, sack anyone who asks for rights is it? What if your manager cut your pay, hours,?

You would soon change your tune. I don't work in the post office, but a little patience is in order.

this the same amazon who send loads of stuff now via HDN,gave TNT the contract for 2nd class items and TNT were getting RM to deliver via downstream access
does that sound like a workable system? RM lose the contract,TNT get it but get RM to deliver it for them so RM still does the work.

I agreed with it when it was for rights. But we all have the same employment rights now and there are laws in place.
If the terms are against the law go sue for constructive dismissal.

Strikes are used as a black mail tool now. They could end up bringing down the company so they all lose their jobs.

Do you ever wonder why it is only the public sector who only ever strike?

It is a strike against the possibility of job losses. so what will losing contracts do to jobs?
Unions screw workers now, they don't help them.

    so whats the solution
    heres my example
our office has gone through RM's latest changes
new larger duties, van duties collapsed onto walking duties
now im required to return to the office than previously finish on the street(20 minutes travel each way)
    6am start
we usually leave the office around 9.45 am
    20 minutes travel
    10.05
packet deliveries, firms (these are just the old driver duties) 30-40 minutes
    10.45
    finish time is 2pm
that leaves 3h 15 - 20 minutes travel back to the office - putting undelivered packets back etc say 10 minutes
so 2.45 to do a duty RM say takes 3.30. i am supposed to use the van for deliveries (supposedly saving time) except there is hardly any parking as its moslty resident parking

Accept their will have to be some cuts like all companies are doing at the moment rather than the union lose you all wages and possibly more jobs.

I am not anti royal mail but it needs to be run like a private business as it now has serious competition.

I suspect this is more a case of the union using the "soldiers" to lash out at part privatisation.
Don't get me wrong i feel for you workers but feel that the union are screwing you guys over and doing serious damage to the business.

you seem to miss my point
we have and are being told(by the fact the software says so) the the duties like mine are achievable within the 8 hour day.
after all RM like to use the line we just want our workers to work the hours they are paid
    look at the times
so do i bring mail back? leave out the businesses? work over for free? take the 3rd degree every day over why i cant complete my duty in the time?
so whats the answer given we have done exactly what RM wanted to the letter(no pun) as an office.

It's funny really. The CWU are going on strike yet they believe that their employers are insolvent:

    http://www.cwuessex.org/1_news/2009/2009_02_26_ukbill.htm
Royal Mail is.....insolvent because of the pension deficit, which is higher than that of any FTSE100 company. The deficit has increased by 75% (£2.5Bn) since 2006.

It's worth noting that the CWU keeps its own financial statements available to its members only so its not possible for me to see how much Mr Hayes and his comrades earn from the largesse of the employees of the Royal Mail. Perhaps a CWU member could oblige us?
