    I know, I know....I'm boring!

Can't help it, I get just as orgasmic over difficult files with lots of figures as others do about that Depp fellow!:rotfl:
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.
  • I think along the lines its been a cushy job. Then someone come along and done a 4 hour shift of posting letters in 3 hours.

RM caught hold of this and decided most employees could do the same. This is what they don't like and decided then on striking.

I'm not saying its the same every day depending on the post. But if John for example can deliver 50 items of mail to 80 houses in one street in 20 minutes say, how come it takes Micky 40 minutes.

Its the same as when I used to run a shop, The shop opened at 9 am, the staff turned up at 8.55 am. It then took them 45 minutes to get the stock ready to go out on display. Come 4.15pm the stock was being put back in the premise as they finished at 5pm.

I questioned why they couldn't come in earlier to put the stock out and the reply was we start at 9. My reply was you also finish at 5 so get it back out. Then I had blah blah blah I'm not happy etc we finish at 5.

I think you know the outcome..... New staff

That's the crucial point to postmen. To everyone else, the crucial point is that they want the communication they need to be delivered quickly and cheaply.

If someone owes me money, I don't care if they post me cheque or electronically transfer money into my account. If there's a risk the postmen will be on strike (again) then I do care - I want the electronic transfer and I may even offer a discount for it.

I live in Australia. If it's my Mum's birthday (she lives in England) then I know she likes to receive a card. I know that she would rather have an email on her birthday than a card at some point, 'meh, well y'no, we're on strike this week and next week's a bank holiday, and we've got a couple of strikes just after that. We might be able to deliver in a month. Or perhaps Royal Mail bosses will chuck it in the bin rather than pay strikers overtime because lets face it, we all must give a flying fk about your petty dispute!

The bosses and the workers are all rubbish and deserve what they will get in 20 years time. No job and no pension.

you seem unable to see the impact on the services of RM's implementation of
    georoute etc
ah well theres no point in me replying to your posts since my responses would be rubbish

    job & finish
    an RM implemented system
job & finish finishes by RM's decision ,fine
im on a 40 hour contract by RM's contract
so the duty day to day should be achievable in this?
    yes?

i have to return to the office every day,i have a tracked van so where exactly are my hours going if its not on delivery?
  • Custardy, First of all I never knew you worked for RM, but I can now see why you are so defensive.

Your contract is just that 40 hours. If you finish your work and say you have 1 hour over for some reason or whatever you work that hour end of story.

Am I right in thinking this or is there something else going on.

under the 'old' system i had my 'walk' duty
once this was completed then i was done.
if its was 3 hours early it didnt matter! lol it didnt happen but that was the spirit of it
RM have now said they want to utilise all hours
thats fine i have no problem with that.
however the issue is RM used tweaked figures to arge what is a full days work.
EG if my walk has been computer designed to take my full days work
then how can i have time to take out part of another duty?
thats disregarding the fact my duty is too long and they didnt allocate the full travel time to/from my duty.they allocated 5 minutes all in and it takes 20 each way.

then you get to the point of working over your time.
this varies, when the budget is good then managers will authorize overtime.
however you are required to forecast that day before leaving the office
if the budget is poor(most times) you will be questioned as to why you expect to go over
if needs be you will stream out mailsort mail,if thats not enough then 2nd class mail
if need be you will leave packets as well
the next day you are expected to put all this into your 'frame' first then see what mail you will take from that days mail to make your 'time'

if you work over but dont claim OT then you can expect to get left alone ;)

when you stream you can expect to be followed by managers and generally harangued throughout the day.

my own office is running about £50K over budget on overtime payments

until the last round of 'savings' my own office ran pretty well.
there were days when we ran over but it was never every day of the week

    oh and for the record
ive worked for RM for about 4 years
it was and is a stepping stone for me to get back to uni
all being well i wont go over 5 years
so its not a long term issue for me but if RM continue the way they are going then now will be the good times you look back upon regarding the postal service!!
remember i post stuff and recieve stuff too ;)
  • So do these managers crack on with the job aswell or are they the type that say "thats your job do it"

What I'm trying to get at is, if they are not hands on how do they know the limit of the job.

well put it this way.most days when i go back to the office(late)
theres not a manager in the place ;)
the problem in RM is if you are a manager who argues your corner and tells it like it is,you wont go far.
if you say yes boss, cover up things, cook the figures and do whatever it takes regardless of staff service etc,you will get on great.

the problem the managers have is if at the end of the day they have duties uncovered and cant get it covered by anybody in any office then they have to take it out.
however theres plenty of 'docket kings' dotted through RM

a couple of months ago all the managers in RM got bonuses of £000's for achieving savings etc.
so you can imagine how keen they are to push it all through

my direct manager in my office is someone who used to be a postie and i know him well.
he has conceded my duty is too big but has said in no uncertain terms it will not be cut

Part of the issue with this example is you are assuming like RM is that all streets and properties are equal in one area.

Having delivered newspapers as a teenage I know that you can deliver say to 10 properties in less than 10 minutes but it can take you 10 minutes to deliver to 5 properties due to the fact people can have long drives, horrid letterboxes that bite your fingers or are at ground level, dogs, blocks of flats with individual front doors, houses divided into flats with their own frontdoors in strange places, etc.

The real issue of course is the fact that workers would knock of early as they had no incentive to do an extra hour or few minutes.

Some of the jobs I've done the management worked hard at incentiving people to work hard by giving vouchers etc. Lots of people think this is a waste of time, especially those who think that having a job is enough. I agree to a certain extent that having vouchers etc didn't work as an incentive to me as the jobs I've worked hardest in where the jobs where I saw the management help out by doing the lowest job when there was a deadline or clearly a lot of work on, say "thank you" to people and acknowledge staff at all levels as human beings.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p
