    I have virgin broadband,

    Our setup is..

Cable into house >> Blue Virgin Cable Modem >> Ethernet Cable >> Netgear Wireless Router >> Ethernet Cable >> Tower

This enables wireless to be available at anytime, even if the tower is off.

Max performance, see pic above. This may not be the cause of your problem, but is something to rule out.

Shouldn't make any difference, if it is a dg834g, check that the idle timeout on the basic setting screen is set to 0

Is there any set pattern to it dropping, ie after an hour, or after a period of inactivity, or on battery power, or after a hibernate?

    Yes that's the one,ok i'll check it.
It's usually dropping after ,,shut down,, say i turn it off at 1am and at 5am it's 90% guarantee that it will be no internet..
If i try to connect to it,it will say something like,, user time out,, i can't remember .
    Good Luck Everyone!
