so what was your salary at your previous job?
theyll use that sort of figure as the min salary for jobs

It was paid hourly not annually, but was on £8 per hour with 51hours per week.
So £19,584 per year basic + overtime.

I only resigned from my job 3weeks ago, giving my 2weeks notice the day before i started the 2weeks annual leave that id booked, and so put the claim in for benefits that afternoon.

Am confused here, the jobcentre will not allowed a claim to go in until yout frst day unemployed not once the notice is handed in so you could not have put the claim in that afternooon.

And since you resigned would you not have had to wait a further 6 weeks for jsa? (am sure someone can correct me if I am wrong)

Yes, you can set a min salary level and only look for jobs at that band but (again not 100% sure since I didn't put any conditions down when I was n jsa) that is only availablefor the first 3-6 months, after that you have to apply for any appropriate job.

    Yeah,
it was a very messy and complex resignation though. :/

I was basically told my my manager, who was very dodgy and corrupt, that i was going to be given a very bad apprasail,
and as i was still within my 1st 6months so on probation contract id have it terminated instantly, as they only need to give 48hours notice.

And so instead of that happening and me having a sacking on my file, that i should resign on that day,
but that i could have it so id get my 2weeks pay of which id already booked as annual leave for an operation that i was having + get the £200 for the next 2days of the week as i resigned on a wednesday lunchtime + cash in hand topups for the next 4months.

And that he would make sure the HR department sorted it out with the jobcentre to show as me just ''not being kept on past/during probabtion'',
so that id still be able to get JSA and LHA benefits.

Since he had really really wanted to get rid of me for a long long time,
but theres quite alot of major complexities and factors which made it not a straightforward thing for him to try having done, unless he could get me to agree to resigning instead.

I foundout that i can only get my JSA backdated to the 25th Sept though, which was day i put my online claim in for it,
as id been told when i tried making the JSA claim on the 9th that it had to be ESA claim as i was having an operation.

My LHA allowance will be able to be backdated to just after the 9th though which is good, as that pays nearly double per week what JSA does.

And i should be able to get my JSA backdated to the 25th as thats when i put my cliam in online.
So il make sure that its backdated to then.

If its that im ''small-minded'' cos id never do a min wage job,
    then yep i wont ever,
but its not cos im small minded or think im too good for it... lol

I simply have set my min salary level at the level i put it in the agreement (which is still very very low),
because theres no point in me getting a crap paying job that on its salary i wouldnt be able to do,
even if i got it, as i simply couldnt afford the train fares to get there!

Small minded because you are implying that a wage is all that a job can give you.

My boyfriend's first ever job after graduation in 1994 earned him £4000pa full time. I've still got a copy of his offer letter. I guess you would never have given that job a second's thought? Within 4 years, he was on over £30k and within less than 10, he was on £50k.

My first job after graduation was in 1995 for £7000 pa. Within 2 years, I was on £40k.

To think that a minimum wage job will only ever bring you in a minimum wage is very small minded.

And that's just the money side of things. Employment gives you so much more than that.

Stuff the job centre calculators. They are for mugs who can't see past their noses.

Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."

Yes you can spout as much old fashioned nonsense and wishful thing as you want to,
but at the end of the day you then have to come back to reality, open your eyes, get a brain while your at it, and start seeing the real world for how it is.

If you lived in some old fashion village in deep south texas you may be able to start at the bottom of the ladder, and a few years later the boss will have you marrying his daughter and running his company.. :rotfl:
    :rotfl:

But in the real modern business world anyone who believes that you can start at the bottom and just gradually rise up is just a fool.

You get a min wage job thats it, thats the job, you turnup and do it everyday and thats it.

You are just a number, you may have a friendly manager or may have a prik, doesnt really matter either way though as all that guy cares about is getting his salary to pay his rent and bills by managing to keep his job.

So no matter how hard you work or how much you suckup he wont ever recommend that you move into his job, which if you are on min wage he will probs only be on £1 t £2 per hour more than you.

The min wage jobs are given as the lowest crappest manual labour 1s that require very little or no skill at all, and so they are paid that wage.

The people who would are higher up dont give a toss about the people who do them,
they just care that the tasks of those jobs are done to keep the company running smoothly, and so to keep them in their jobs.

You have a very very weird out-dated view of reality.

To answer your original question. I'm under 25 and I have been given the better off calculation (I certainly didn't ask for it!) From what I remember it was fairly basic and didn't take into account any travel costs.

How boring must it be to have absolutely zero aspirations.

Where do you think we all started out?

It's not just me, it's everyone. It's the way the world works.

My brother got his job two years ago this month. Working for £14k pa in a warehouse on a temporary contract over the Chirstmas period. He's just been promoted after being kept on for the past two years for working so hard and is on £25k. He's also now on the management trainee program and the next wage jump once he moves into management is £32k.

Of course that's how it works. Get a job. Be good at it. Move up and onwards.

    It's called the real world.

  • It's all very well people saying start off at the bottom and work your way up etc but people have bills to pay and it's sometimes IMPOSSIBLE to live on such a low wage.Yesterday I went for a job as a Kicthen Porter I was offered 20 hours per week on the min wage for under 21's £4.83.This works out at around £8 more than jobseekers allowance after tax/travel etc...the job was terrible aswell.I am just not willing to do it.It sounds bad but i'm not willing to go and work in a horrible enviroment for a few quid more than on Jobseekers...ok they said it's a foot in the door etc but 6 months on 8 quid more than JSA working in a vile enviroment.no thanks.
