I bought an Evesham laptop in January. The hard drive had to be replaced twice in July. Now it has stopped working again, looks like some sort of power spike problem. They have said they will send a courier on Monday, it could take 7 days to sort (if they sort it) I might loose all my data again (apart from what I've got backed up on my Freecom).

Do you think I've got grounds for asking for my money back? I use this laptop to produce a magazine. I'm supposed to be in production mode next week, which I now cannot do unless I go out and buy another laptop (my trusty old PC on which I type, can't handle the software), so it's affecting my business seriously.

  • PC world are currently selling the advent 7081 for £399. it seems pretty good for the price. and now you can also get a usb stick to go wireless. i can't find any reviews on this product so if anyone else can, perhaps you could post it up on this board.

The advent 7081 is the laptop I recommended. If you keep an eye peeled you can get it for £374.99 using the correct dixons/pc world/currys discount code.

I still think its one of the better deals at the moment. I mean its sub £400 with a DVD rewriter and good CPU.
  • Finally made-up my mind and went for the following at currys -

    http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/574701

    PACKARD BELL B3605 £499
    AMD Sempron 3000+ Processor
    512 Mb RAM
    50 Gb Hard Drive
    DVD ReWriter MultiDrive
    15" LCD display
    Wireless Enabled

I made the total price over £500 and got £40 of using the code CURRYS40.
Seems good for £460. Will let all know what its like when i get it.

Looks like a decent laptop, I have dissapointed with semperaon performnce on desktops but I suspect it will kick the !!!!!! of any celeron.

I might get the Thinkpad from stables but I don't want to buy something with propiatary memory dimms :(

    Hi,
Can anyone confirm the promo code for either the Advent 7081 at PC World/Currys or the Packard Bell?

    Thanks

The thinkpad doesn't use propiatary dimms at all. I ended up buying one and upgrading the ram to 512.

It is a great laptop, I would consider it before buying lesser 'named' laptops

My MIL wants to buy my technophobe FIL a laptop for Christmas so he can keep himself amused on the net in his retirement. I've explored the desktop vs laptop value for money argument with them and it's definitely a laptop that's wanted. I'm looking for something like a fairly low spec Celeron-M 1.4 or 1.5 (with WiFi - I thought they all did but I notice some Acers don't). 256MB and 40GB should be fine and a CD Writer DVD combo will suffice (though a DVD writer wouldn't go wrong). Her budget is around £400 but all the bargains appear to have disappeared. I know Woolies were doing Acers and Fujitsu-Siemens at reasonable prices a wee while back, but the best I can find just now is an Acer at around £450 delivered. Any suggestions?

I'd stick to a reputable brand when buying a laptop, hp/compaq, ibm, tosh etc.
