Cheers, think I'll take the plunge and go for this. Comparing prices of similar spec it's seems a good deal.
  • Whatever you do, don't don't don't use Ebuyer. They have been slammed recently by Which? and there are several discussion boards on the web revealing that they consistently send the wrong or malfunctioning stuff, and then spend months and months replacing it or do not do so at all. I was given the run around by them on a multifunctional and found that only letters before legal action worked. See the discussions on Pricerunner at the very least.
  • Has anyone heard of this website https://www.wizmarkcomputers.co.uk, they seem to list all of the deals dell are doing. I am in the market for a laptop should i wait until the "january sales"? What the best deal anyone has seen for under £500??

    Thanks Neil

    my question is
    1) how difficult is it to return the £499 gateway ( the young chap said ,if you are unhappy, bring it BACK-whatever reason!) within 14 days

    2) is it worth the extra £65 to get the ACER

    3) the screen on this Gateway is SUPERB,anyone know if the acer is good also??

  • Can anyone tell me where I can get a good cheap laptop from. I have been looking aroung and see that Currys are doing one for £399. It has Intel Celeron inside. Don't know much about computers but am sure I have heard someone say to me dont buy one with celeron, can you tell me if this is right.

I would only be using it for the net and a bit of word and excel.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As this thread is now VERY long and many of the laptops mentioned are no longer available, could we have a round-up of what eveyone has found in the low-price laptop market RECENTLY:

I've seen an NEC one at Staples for £399 The spec on that one appeared to be the best in the £399 field. Built in WiFi. Anyone got any comments on this one?

Should I instead go for a £340-£399 Dell? New offers probably starting tomorrow...

Anyone bought the awful-specced PCWorld £299 lappy? Any comments from actual buyers?

Post your £399 (and below) nationally-available laptop offers and reviews here!

Please include vital specs if you've got them (screen size/HDD size/Processor/RAM/WiFi/Optical drive spec) and include a weblink if it's online.

Just took the plunge and bought an NEC I-select 5210 from Staples for £399.

I was going to plump for the IBM T50e but the sales lad said they were being discontinued.

    This one has a Celeron 1.4ghz chip,40 GB HDD,256MB ram,a DVD-RW and Wi-Fi.You don't get much software with it though,but for 400 quid I think it's a pretty good deal.

BTW I went to PC World on boxing day to look at the £299 lappy they were advertising. It was an old spec and I think they must have been holding them back for a while just to get people in the door. They had sold out after about half an hour aswell.
