That's the kind of thing i'm hanging in for.......but.....I have to ask a really stupid question......all the Dell laptops have a USB floppy for an extra £40 or so. If I don't add one to the price, I guess I won't be able to use floppies? Is this now standard with new laptops? The cheap Acers etc - do they have floppy disc drives with them as standard (or am I being thick in some way?!!)

you can pick usb floppy drives on ebay for about £20...same as Dell sell !!

Try to get out of the floppy habit. You'll have a CD writer so why use disks that can take less than 2mb when you can use discs that take 700mb.

So true... but then it's hard to break a habit :)

Tesco's have an Acer Centrino laptop with Pentium-M 1.6ghz and DVD writer in store at present for £568 which sounds like a decent price to me.

I saw that too - is that machine any good for the price? What about the dell? for £548?
  • There are many offers on these days but at the end of the day I would rather by a laptop from PCWorld rather than eBay, simple because I feel that if you are inexperienced with laptop and you had a problem where would you turn.
  • Spec for a mid range laptop:

2 GHz or more (1.2 mobile) pentium
256 mb ddr ram (the more you have the better it is, i recommend having 512 but 256 is ok for most users)
40 gig hdd (the smaller the harddrive the faster the laptop will load, esiar to locate files)

If you can get all of the above for under £450 you're Ok any more and they're pulling you arm.
