    51p, PN?

    Does it increase soon?

Sounds like a lot of work for 51p.

Have you thought of doing one of the online question-answering services (see Up Your Income board)? It's easy peasy, you'd be fab at it and it's 30p per question. Not big money, but it would take you a few minutes max to earn your 60p, rather than several days?

    well, you must be odd

half an hour to choose what is basically a snack

By your standards, I'm odd, because I care what I put into my body.

OK, but I'm happier living by my standards.:p

The best Pasties in the world come from Ye Olde Pastie Shop in Bolton. I was an avowed anti-pasty person until I tried them. When I started working in Bolton I was stunned to discover that at the company I was working for you didn't bring in cakes on your Birthday, you went to the pasty shop. I stated that I hated pasties but everyone insisted I must try one. They are beyond delicious and I have made special trips to Bolton so I can get a bag of cold pastys for my freezer. They have a queue out the door all day. I've seen their pasties advertised in other shops as being for sale so they must do large orders as well.

They keep it simple, tasty sandwiches with good bread and fresh fillings and also cakes, nothing too fancy, just proper food you want to eat. That is the way to go. Keep it fresh and simple.

I want a Ye Olde Pastie Shop Pasty now, guess I'm driving to Bolton on my day off!

Ah, but that's not residual. I have other ways I could earn more, answering questions isn't likely to lead to a full-time income, it's OK for those who are supported and earning extra, I need to work at a complete income. So I do stuff that takes a lot of setup time, hoping it'll pay off once the tipping point is reached.

Looks a dump to me. Maybe get Ye Olde Salmonella and Ye Olde Closedde Downe soon.

Names like Ye Olde and Original make me naturally suspicious.

The one that gets me, well, almost quite cross, is ye old tea shoppe. We have near by the confusingly and historically slightly doubtful ''Ye old seventeenth century tea roomes''. Considering the delay it took sushi to reach my beloeved sleepy SW from its introduction as the food to eat in London I think it unlikely ''Ye Olde Tea roomes'' actually were anything more modern than a coffee house. The starbucks of its day. In reality though it was probably a grimey tavern, with the over powering odour of cow and stale man.

But ye old 17th century tea house, if thats what it were would have been a centre of outstanding modernity and modish chic.

Unfortunately, I don't eat pasties, ever, and haven't stepped foot in a Greggs for years but I do know of fab food outlets who are doing extremely well, but others who sold amazing products that had to close as the profits just weren't enough.

I would def recomend a day trip to Bills as Richard Caring of Ivy is investing in his concept....which is always packed and really off the tourist map....all local trade. It's the nearest I come to ever eating a pie, his goats cheese and veg tart.

Negatives are from what I have seen from food outlets opeing near me over the years. The saddest thing is the really good ones just cannot make it pay.

Worse, we had an amazing local restauarant open, she lasted 2 years and the food was superb, all South Downs lamb, Local veg, a singer at the weekend, really healthy tasty inspired food. She just couldn't persuade people that she was better than the cruddy 2 4 1 fake french bistros with their boil in a bag, microwaved food despite matching them on price per main course.

The second was a faultess business model that I am happy to PM you the name of. He did everything well (IMO and I can be a harsh critic :o) and it should have worked...well, it did as he had many loyal customers but he couldn't get it to pay. OK, he acknowledged that he paid too high rent, but even taking the rent down 50% it couldn't earn him more than 10k pa. working 7 days. He produced the best baguettes and proper pork pies for miles around at very reasonable prices....but then, perhaps that is why he couldn't make it pay?

Would it not be better to use the shop you already own outright? As long as you cook off the premises, you can serve takeout I believe (or do a Starbucks and ignore the planning rules....but that's not a good idea).

In the end, one sets an amount in £ to put into the venture, a set amount of time to give it a go (I would say one year so thats 52 X 65 hrs of your time) and just do it.
Could go 2 ways, works or doesn't.

Traditionally, margins were much higher on food but I don't know if this still applies. H + S is expensive too.

Let us know what you decide cos it sounds exciting.:D

In general, one should Turnover 10 X rent. Gives you an idea of footfall and spend required every day.

Oh, come on... admit it... you have a dozen buy-to-lets for sale in Bolton and you're ramping the place in a blatant attempt to shift them.

This is a serious economics debating board. You don't think erudite contributors like us would be influenced by your over-enthusiastic recommendation, do you?

PS. Which street is it in?*

*ETA While I'm away, distracted elsewhere, I see PN has already provided a piccie and a bloomin' map as well! Is there no end to her talents?

Lots of you have mentioned Greggs. Am I the only one here who, on going to a new town, spends maybe half an hour sizing-up the local bakers and avoiding Greggs like the plague?

    Yes you are.
