The UK Government, chiefly the Prime Minister and Lord Mandelson, has been pivotal to reaching agreement today.

If they'd got their act together months ago, the deal would've been done long before today though. It's just typical labour dithering.

The difference is, Vaux. produce cars people want now, unlike british leyland.

Whats the betting the Vauxhall deal lasts as long as the remainder of Labours' term? I am betting that unfortunately, they are beyond saving and will go bust anyway, without major investment from the government.

A few pay cuts does not save a multinational corporation. The era of cutting wea re about to go through doesnt go hand in hand with bailing out struggling industry. Although, IMO, investment in industry is exactly what we should have been spending the money on during the boom years.

No she didn't, the British people lousy management and union militancy did that.

Do you actually remember the good old days when it took a year to get a telephone line installed, waited ages for a British made car then watch as it was towed when it broke down. Its no wonder the buying public found it cheaper and the quality was better by buying foreign.

The three day week. constant power cuts, rubbish piled up in the streets indeed those were the days how we miss them !

It was Maggie who brought Nissan to the UK which then kick-started other foreign investment.

Love her or hate her and Maggie seems to be one of those figures who divide society, but a lot of what she did was necessary given the state the UK was in at the time .

Unions may have caused trouble but despite all that industrial production fell massively because of Maggie polices and they never recovered. If industry was encouraged to reform and grow maybe we wouldn't have been so reliant on the financial sector like we are today.

From the policies I have heard about it looks like manufacturing industry may be in for another pasting.

You mean that the Tories will resume the destruction of British industry I pressume
'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher

    More from Anthony Hilton
    Cause for alarm over Cameron
If, as appears to be the case, the City really believes that the independence of the Bank of England is a good thing, it ought to look hard at this extract from David Cameron's speech at the Conservative Party conference in Manchester last week.
Banging on about the economy, he said in part: “If we spend more than we earn, we have to get the money from somewhere. Right now the Government is simply printing it. Sometime soon that will have to stop because in the end printing money leads to inflation.”
Well, the point is that it is not the Government that is printing money, nor is it the Government that took the decision to print. It is the Bank of England. Likewise, it is not for the Government to say when quantitative easing will or should stop — again that is the Bank of England's call. That is what independence means.
There are perhaps two things to be gleaned from this. Either Cameron plans to bring the Bank of England back under Government control, or he still does not fully grasp what is being done by whom to cope with the financial crisis. I leave it to readers to decide which is the more alarming.

Actually, as far as I'm aware, the BoE had to ask the government for permission to print money. That's why it was limited to £150bn cause that's all the government gave permission for.

Tory Lackeys are incapable of understanding that the only method of receiving any return on our tax pounds is through public services.

Hard to grasp but there you go.

Public services are a total drain. There is no return from them. For example, roads aren't built for the government to make a profit.

Or do you mean, it's the only way for the taxpayer to get the money back out of the system again? If so, what do you propose doing with the almost 1 trillion of debt on the books? Accruing interest at 40 billion per annum isn't the way forward. Labour have vastly overspent and now it has to be paid back, you blame the Tories? Some people's logic doesn't make sense.

Maybe you'd prefer the country to be bankrupt though? Then nobody would have anything.
