Money Moral Dilemma. Would you hand in a camera you found on a beach?

  • When on holiday in Turkey we went on a day trip and stopped off en route for breakfast. We found out later that someone from another coach party left his wallet at the service area. He was going to stay overnight at a different hotel on an extended trip. That night his wallet was at that hotel - the people at the service area had given it to one of the following coach drivers to pass on.

I wouldn't hand it in. I would look at the photos for clues like what hotel they are staying at, and as I would probably be visiting the beach again you never know I might bump into the owner then I would def give it back.

Failing that I would just have to keep it. They shouldn't be so careless in future!!
  • Since the benefit cuts are coming in no I would sell it to pay for food and heating. There again I cant afford a beach holiday anyway:rotfl:

    Thanks for that helpful comment.

Tell me, are you as bent as said Italian copper - or are you only half a scumbag, being half-Italian?

My word – yet another individual needing lessons in RTWFM (reading the whole message).

Where have I advocated or supported any "bent" course of action?! I have supported the suggestion of personally locating the rightful owner using the pictures stored on the device, in lieu of handing in the item to notoriously corrupt Italian police.

As to my genealogy, if any of the half of me that is not Italian shares a shred of DNA similar to your own, then I would have to concede the possibility that I may be half scumbag.

Depends on the situation. I'd have a look at the pictures for anything identifying. If I was in a resort there may well be a picture of the group in the resort and I could hand that in to reception.

After that it depends on the locale, it is indeed common for lost property to be claimed by staff (with a range of delays given for people to reclaim). Some places are better than others, with more regimented and policed policies. If it was a scenario where there was somewhere obvious for the owner to check I would hand it in there. If it seemed highly unlikely to be returnable I might keep it but to be honest who wants someone else's camera?

Great idea about taking a picture of details by the way.
  • Take a photo of your email address or some other way of contacting you. That way, if you lose your camera, anyone with a shred of honesty has a way of contacting you!

    YES!
I actually lost (& had returned) my camera in Turkey.

The hotel manager was surprised I was surprised to get it back.

He said "we are honest in Turkey".

I said, "you may well be, but the hotel is full of English people".:D
  • The Miss Marple in me would make me look at the pics & try to find the person...
I wouldn't hand it in unless I couldn't find them as I'd expect police/hotel staff to keep it for themselves...
I always try to reunite people with their post when it gets posted wrongly through my door, the best so far was I recently found a birthday girl through facebook & delivered her a birthday card that I received instead of her - just a little detour on my walk into town! She is very happy I went to the trouble but all it took was 1 minute of my time to google her name & message her through facebook!
Just off to polish my halo!

  • I would hand it in at the nearest hotel. While a £100 camera can hardly be considered valuable, any pictures contained inside might be irreplaceable,

What if its some kind of cry for help? I'd check the pictures, see if a) I regocnise anyone and b) if there was anything suspicious on it.

If I had the money to go visit a foreign country, I'd have enough common sense to know how to contact the police and hand in the camera. I am not a great camera fan, (second hand cameras don't sell anyway as cameras are all on phones now-a-days). I would not take it for myself, I'd be too worried about Karma!
