I find a purse in the UK and the police said we will contact the owner tomorrow. I thought that's awful the person will be looking and worrying. She had an unusual name so I looked it up in the phonebook and rang and she was so grateful and said why didn't the police ring sooner and how she would have been worried sick. I didn't open the purse to look for details in case someone accused me of trying to steal and the police station was near. Next time I'm going into a shop and asking them to watch me open it on CCTV. Then I will ring.
I found a wallet with a business card, took it to the business and left it with reception. I left my details and he never even thanked me. I thought that was really mean.
With the purse the woman offered me a reward, and thanked me so much. I didnt want the reward but the thanks was lovely0 -
Would definitely hand it in to the hotel where I was staying or my holiday rep. Would hope someone would do the same if I lost my camera, and I couldn't keep it or just leave it there.Every day is a new life to a wise man.
Sufficient for the day are it's own worries.:cool:0 -
In the case of a camera, looking at the pics is definitely a good idea for identifying whose it is. I found one in Birmingham a year or so ago, and looking at the snaps could tell it was a Chinese family's holiday pics. I saw them on New Street about half an hour later, and they were very happy to get it back. I daresay the police wouldn't have been so quick!0

Hand it over to you tour rep0

I would hand it in, I would be most upset if my camera went missing and the thought of losing my pictures would be devastating and I wouldn't want to put anyone else through it.0

I would definitely try to hand it in to the police station unless I know it was a corrupt country as some have suggested. Also a good idea to look at the photos and see if you recognise anyone from them on the beach. It's worth more than £100 when you lose precious photos.0

I have recently found a mobile phone and a wallet, both of which I managed to return to their owners with a bit of detective work. The owner of the wallet sent a gift voucher as thanks, which was very kind.
A few years ago my husband left our camera on the deck of a ferry on our return from a holiday in France. He ran back up to the deck to find it, but someone had taken it. We contacted the ferry company, but it wasn't handed in. I wasn't bothered about the camera nearly as much as the photos of my family, which couldn't be replaced. I still feel fed up remembering it now0 -
I lost a camera on the beach in Brittany this year (the strap broke on the case and it fell on the sand without me realising it). We asked around and went to the local town hall (where we were directed) but no-one had handed it in.
That evening the rep knocked on our caravan door to say that our picture had been emailed to the campsite and someone at the campsite reception then recognised us.
The camera had been handed in to the lifeguard (who was part of the local police), who had looked at the pictures, seen a picture of a pool with a water slide and spent a lot of time and trouble emailing all the campsites in the area with a water slide in order to find us.
When I collected the camera he was happy enough to accept a bottle of whisky as a reward. He didn't have details of who handed it in.0 -
This exact thing has happened and the person who found the camera has posted a page on Facebook to try to find the owner. See Needle in a Haystack on Facebook and join the hunt. It will be a fascinating experiment in Six Degrees of Separation.:T0
