I still get 1p in the £1 from Citibank platinum and I 'm quite happy with that.

Just a quick note on the BA Amex card

In order to qualify for the free companion flight, you need to spend £20,000 in one year.

Previously you could rack up the £20,000 over a period of years but they have changed the terms and conditions.

At the end of every 12 month period your spend (counted towards the £20,000 target) is reset and you start again, so the deal on this card is not as good as it once was and is suitable more for heavy spenders!

I use a Capital One Circle Rebate card which pays me 1% cash back year in and year out on whatever I spend. Before this I had a Morgan Stanley 1% platinum card until they reduced their rate.

Last month, seduced by the MSE site, I was unfaithful to Capital One and started to use the Morgan Stanley again, believing that it would give me 2% cash back until September.

But when I got the statement, I found that the 2% only applies to new customers.

The Cashback BonusTM award is 1% of the first £2,000 of purchases and 0.5% thereafter of Purchases (up to your Credit Limit) made in a particular year. From the date your Account is opened up to and including 1st September 2006, we will double the amount of Cashback BonusTM award you earn. See Cashback Bonus rules for additional information.

    Hi Campden

Hope it wasn't the article that confused you. It says

The Morgan Stanley* card pays 1% on all spending up to the first £2,000 a year and then 0.5% after that. Yet it commonly runs an introductory ‘double cashback’ offer, for the first four-ish months. This doubling cashback means at up to 2% cashback it outperforms the flat rate cards for those spending less than £5,000 in the first year. After that those spending £2,000 a year plus should consider switching to another card.

which i hope is quite clear that the double cashback is only for new cardholders?

Yes, thanks, it's clear. I was just hoping for the benefit of extra cash back and the convenience of a card I already had.

    Read the small print carefully.

    Thanks for your site

circle one has been reduced for most customers and new customers. A few people (me too) have kept the legacy card.

GE card is already in the cashback article, its being added to the checker, and should be there today

Yeah - I have a colleague who used to get 1% on cirlce but got downgraded to 0.5% - I wonder how they decided who keeps the 1%

I also got the citicard 1% in case the cap one is withdrawn but have to remeber to use it at least 500pa.

I plan to apply for the ge money but am a bit worried my stoozing, ban bonus, loan bonus and recent remortgage will result in a rejection, tried in the wife's name but she got rejected even though we have kept her credit record much cleaner.

Should also use the AMEX 2% really but find it too annoying that it is not accepted that widely.
    I think....
  • Great card for long distance commuters!

I drive around 500 miles a week commuting to work and use the Shell Visa card in conjunction with their bonus points scheme - do not go near this card if you think you may not clear it each month as the apr is high. HOWEVER, by buying my fuel using Shell's own card I get 3 bonus points per litre instead of 1. You cash in 1500 points for a £10 voucher. I average £60 a year in vouchers which I can use at: Shell, Next, Woolworths, B&Q, Debenhams and even my local curry house! Over the last 18 months I've managed to buy an entire denby dinner set using only my 'commuting' vouchers. A fair reward I think!

As I said though, it's good for us 'dawn patrollers!' and only consider it if you have the discipline to pay it off in full each month.

Sorry, Jon, but you are wrong! The qualification (using my type of AmexBA card) is £10,000. This will not prove difficult to attain for many on this forum.

WARNING - GE Money Everyday Card
This is a very difficult card to obtain. I have a faultless credit record and still no acceptance. I asked at GE Money for any clues as to why I was rejected and they just refered me to Experian. I already have a recent copy of my credit record so I am 99.9% certain it has little to do with the rejection. I would suggest that GE Money are actually looking for people who may not have a perfect credit record as this would mean they could claw back some of the money they pay as 3% rebate back in potential late payment fees and balance interest charges.

For anyone who wish's to apply for this card be warned!
  • I have just had a letter from Amex to say the money-back rates for the Platinum card are changing later this year. They are dropping to:

0.5% for aggregate amounts up to £3500

1% for aggregate amounts from £3501 to £10,000

1.5% for aggregate amounts is excess of £10,000

This means that you need to spend more than £13,500 a year on the card to better a straight 1% cashback deal from elsewhere.

The shine goes off the platinum!
