Can you tell us more about their illegal policy to not allow customers to cancel?

Not really, only that the area manager always said to stores that "We don't cancel orders". If a member of staff cancelled an order then they used to get a rollocking from the Area Manager. It was often known for orders to be "cancelled" and then they would turn up at the customers house asking for payment.

The staff in the stores were always always royally stitched up by Head Office/ Distribution Centre and have (had) no influence whatsoever on anything.

As I said, this was a long time ago so not sure what they're up to now.

It was an awful company to work for but I was young, I needed the money :rotfl:

Sounds like you are better off out of there.

I presume they were aware that what they were doing was against the Sale of goods act?
  • Well they didn't give any staff training on the SOGA when I was there. If someone came in quoting law at staff, we were instructed to get them to phone customer services who would normally offer them a Mattress Protector for free in order to keep them sweet (RRP £15 - Real Value approx 10 pence).

The "sales" are legal but are not sales. They simply sell certain beds in certain stores at a high price for a certain number of days and everyone can then sell them at "Half-Price" for 3 months (or something similar).

As I said, it was around 10 years ago so they may have changed (although I doubt it) but they do seem to still be going so I guess they must be doing something right ?

I would never buy a bed from there.

It just shows the power of advertising
  • Well we've had a phone call about my mums bed, by the store manager of Wigan because obviously customer services don't have the balls to ring up and tell my mum that they are now going to charge her £192 for the replacement matress when they said that it would be free of charge because the mattress has become faulty within 12 months. So now they are going back on their word. We have told them that if this is the case we will put the bed in the back of one of our vans and take it down to the Bensons store at Wigan and sit outside the store and tell potential clients not to buy a bed from these cowboys.

I will update when we know more.

If the mattress has developed a fault with 12 months, then they must replace it free of charge, as it it is obviously unfit for purpose.
  • Exactly I thought that too, Lets see what they say when the girl who has been dealing with this comes back off her lunch. I'm more than willing to sit outside Bensons with the bed tomorrow

I told a manager at DFS I was going to do that once. In fact two elderly ladies walked in while we were having an argument. So I turned to them and said "I wouldn't buy from here, the manager has just admitted that the sofas don't last 3 months before they develop faults". So they walked out :rotfl:

At 8am the next morning he phoned me to say that he had spoken to head office, and they weren't going to charge for the replacements. :T
  • The only instance I've had with Bensons was something similar. Had mattress and 101 excuses as to why the bedframe wasn't arriving. Eventually sent letter just saying that if it wasn't with me within 14 days I would start chasing them for a refund. On day 13.....bedframe arrived. It might just have been a coincidence though. I didn't really quote anything at them, just said 14 days or I'll have a refund thanks. Never go through them again.

I really don't know if this would do any good as people in the stores have so little power. Sitting outside their head office on the other hand........
