if you do the maths a lot of the cheaper deals are less than the preorder price + you get phone service.
IMHO its pointless getting something like an N900 without a data plan.
Im personally in a bit of a quandry, the HTC HD2 which is out at the same time has a faster cpu, 50% more real memory (no swap) and a much thinner form factor but it doesnt run linux and lacks the massive 32gigs apps space the n900 has.
if only the n900 looked like the upcoming toshiba F01 and had 512megs real ram i doubt i would ever need to change phone again.0 -
I owned one of the first HTC phones, the Tanager. It ran Windows Mobile. After using it for a couple of years, I had enough and reverted to a non-Windows smartphone.
When it comes to Linux, as I have found on my home computers, it runs faster than Windows anyway. In fact, it will run on a decrepit 10 year old laptop that even XP struggled on, never mind Vista.
Best part is all the applications I want are legitimately free. I have decided a Linux OS on a phone is a big selling point, but if you're not sure, try it for yourself and see how fast it is.0 -
hi
where did you see this deal above ? as i'm also interested in the nokia n900and hope to get it when released.
It was via mobilephonesdirect but that deal has been pulled, checked this morning - demand is obviously high.
I'll be waiting until at least one month after it's been out anyway, price plans are often reviewed after this point anyway.
Worthwhile remembering, I know you can step down on Vodafone each month on their tariffs. So whilst you're locked in for 9 months usually, on month 9 you can step down once, then keep doing this until you're on a suitable tariff. That should save a fair few quid.0 -

Yeah, my day job is a *nix monkey and ive been familiar with linux for over a decade but bloatware still concerns me, even linus thinks its getting out of hand. I havent been able to roll a standard kernel with with less than a 30meg
boot footprint since the 2.4 days. linux makes really good use of ram and with 512 you could pretty much run the current kde for the next decade.
if i had a totally open system i would be tempted to try putting gentoo on it, it is pretty funny seeing posts asking about apps when they have access to the last 30 years worth open source code.0 -
Cheaper than an iPhone. Would you buy that?Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

I've used the N810 for quite sometime and the N800 for a little while before I got the N810.
The apps available for the N810 are LOADS!!! I mean even before the iPhone came along and had apps (most of which are gimmicks) the N810 had one webpage where you added all the repositories and have tonnes of apps.
Its a true hackers device. Also you forget the N810 could run Andriod! So we could just run android or Maeamo as and when we feel like! Maybe even a dual boot system. Afterall they are both just Linux.0
