I love Mike Holmes show , he takes one look ..... and everything gets taken apart. His major problem is the extreme weather and a lot of timber frames.
Also interesting is the 'code' that they have , where we have Regs
I wonder if his 'fear' of mould is justified??
Ps Holmes on Homes is better than all those cooking shows
Good morning: mould is a major issue in Canadian buildings...high levels of insulation/air tightness, triple glazed windows, mechanical ventilation, warm air heating... failure to service heating/air conditioning systems (twice a year) exacerbates indoor air quality issues...that being said, during 35 years in Canada, I never lived in a mouldy or timber-framed house.
I enjoy 'Holmes on Homes' though Mike can be a bit OTT at times. National and Provincial Building Codes and regulation of trades is part and parcel of the construction industry eg. plumbing is a regulated trade

I'm a sucker for this sort of show and occasionally catch Holmes. I was stuck at home last week with a bad cold and watched a lot of cable tv. Tommy Walsh (as in Ground Force) seems to monopolise a lot of channels made up entirely of shows where Tommy rebuilds someone's house or garden.
I have had cable tv from the outset when there were a lot imported US home build shows and it was noticeable how different their materials and techniques were to ours. Last week Tommy and his team were using a number of materials and tools which were only available in the US until a few years ago (like nail guns).0 -
Who are these people that don't have sky/cable? Do I live in some magical land because about 90% of peole I know have them
Well, I've never heard of Mike Holmes either and I love all shows to do with houses/homes/makeovers etc.
We don't have cable, it is not available where we live.
We had Sky for one year, way way back when they were offering dish and box, just pay £40 installation, and only had it because we needed a new aerial and Sky was on offer and gave a better picture. When the year was up we cancelled the basic subscription we had (£7.99 per month then) and kept the Sky box, now have the £20 Freesat from Sky card to get the free to air channels.
Our area has now gone completely digital, analogue was turned off in August here, and we have Freeview through our DVD recorder as well as Freesat from Sky.
That's enough for us, no way would we pay a Sky subscription to access loads of channels that have no interest to us, also I don't know where everyone gets the time to watch all these channels - and we are retired with no commitments so plenty of free time!0 -
Well I seem to have ignited a debate about TV watching that I didn't spot coming....
I have to say I am a massive fan, even though (or maybe because) Mike Holmes can often get very self-righteous and full of indignation at guys who don't "Do It Right"™.
As has been mentioned (by the folk who have seen the show) it's the differences that make it interesting. e.g. the fact that they all seem to have huge basements with vast furnaces, rather than a small boiler in a kitchen cupboard, and that forced-air heating/ventilation is the norm. Also, the fact that they seem to go in for very specific trades, rather than our approach of a builder who does everything - i.e. he gets a guy in just to do the painting, or to fit a shower screen, whatever.
And for those who had never heard of the fella, as requested, here are a couple of links:

PS Apologies for the thread title - I know it's "Holmes on Homes"...:o0 -
debate about TV watching
Yes we seem to have strayed from your OP .
Would love to have the enormous basement often displayed .
But I do have the hot air system ( a marmite )
Perhaps some one ( Canucklehead ??) could tell me the reason /thinking about the ventilation on the plumbing systems.0 -
this is one of my husbands favs, being a carpenter he loves these sort of programs, you would think be would have had enough working on a building site, but no we have to watch buildings being renovated/put right in the evening  he also likes to watch a program called "how its made" if you havent seen it you are in for a treat
(i think it comes listed under documentarys on sky)i would rather watch paint dry, but each to their own

I haven't had sky for a few years now, but I used to love 'This Old House' with 'Steve and Norm' I never liked the new fella they got to replace Steve though!
I thought the main contractors they used - The Silva brothers - were amazing, there didn't seem to be anything those guys couldn't do, and they were superb craftsmen.

yes that was another one of this favorites, did norm do a spin off on his own too?0
