  • My best was just over £90 from a penny jar but I fell into the Coinstar trap. Still, it was nice to have a blowout at the supermarket that felt as though it was free! HSBC here I come!
  • i have a big bells whisky bottle. it's just over half full now and i've been putting 1, 2 & 5ps in it since january 2008. i can only dream how much it will hold... lol. i have taped up the top so nobody dips in it.

    Barclays do it too

I am also interested in tracking down a coin machine (fed up of being charged 8% by the coinstar in tescos!), so I emailed Barclays asking where is the nearest coin machine to me (cambridge).

They sent me a list of all branches that have the coin machines. Thought others might be interested, so here it is:

    Thank you for your email
Our support team have advised of the following branch, please be aware that these are for the use of Barclays Customers:
    CARDIFF
    COLCHESTER HIGH STREET
    CROYDON
    HAMMERSMITH BUSINESS CENTRE
    LEAMINGTON SPA
    LEWISHAM HIGH ST
    LIVERPOOL, LORD STREET
    LOWESTOFT
    LUTON DUNSTABLE RD
    Manchester Market Street
    Manchester City Office (Moseley Street)
    MILE END
    MOORGATE
    WOKING
    WOLVERHAMPTON QUEEN SQUARE

Nowhere very close to Cambridge then :( Looks like Coinstar will continue to get their cut until I can get around to opening an HSBC account to use their machines (I'm far too lazy to do the whole bagging-up thing!)

  • my OH is terrible for just emptying his wallet when he get too many coins, as the coin part is quite small, and leaving smush around the place. after him going to use the coin machine in asda and paying £20 in 'fees' (yes, it was a lot of coins!) we've agreed that I will sort out the coins and pay them into his bank account and keep the 7.8% cut as payment. Since this goes into the joint account it usually gets spent on the shopping, but it's better than paying someone else to sort it for him :D

right - if bank wont change coins for you - just pay them into your account. I tried to change £30 pounds worth of copper and silver last year and the cashier sniffily informed they weren't changing any more that day! thought right you c** so i went and got paying in slip filled it out and waited til i got same cashier. then smiled nicely and handed it all over. the look on her face was priceless. then i went outside and withdrew the lot out of cashpoint.

We had one of those large whiskey bottles when it was about three quarters full we counted it out, my bank only takes 5 bags at a time, luckily I had 2 accounts but it took ages of lugging 10 bags at a time to change it all. Afraid to say that when it got down to the coppers they went in a coinstar machine, but I didn't like giving them my money!

We then got a battery operated coin sorter, now as soon as I have 5 bags full I take it to the bank pay it into my account, then transfer it to a savings account, a lot easier and I still get to see how much we are saving.

You saved all that money and then gave nearly £20 away just like that to Asda, for nothing!
If you want to send it to me, I will count it for you for half that price.

I just can't believe that either I'm completely baffled as to why people who are saving in coin jars would contemplate paying to use those machines, it doesn't make any sense whatsoever to me!
