    How do you find it?

The lady we bought the house off let us have it.

Looks like a good use of the space. I'm curious how you dealt with the soil pipe in the floor as it looks like the washing machine is on top of it. If you used it for the washing machine waste hope you fitted a trap else it might get a bit smelly in there.

The washing machine actually just sits in front of it.

What do you mean by 'trap'? I cut a bit of wood the same size as the pipe, then cut a hole the same size as the waste pipe from the washing machine and fed it through.

See the bottom of the page here. Also look in the manual for your washing machine which should give the minimum and maximum heights for the waste outlet and often provides guidance on fitting the waste.

My advice is to goto your local plumber's merchants such as PTS, Plumbase, plumbcentre. Explain you want a proper cap to seal a soil pipe that will allow you to connect a stand pipe waste for your washing machine and hopefully they'll sell you what you need. The cut wood cap sounds a bit of a bodge TBH ..will see if i can find a link to a better way of capping the pipe off. Wouldn't think it will cost you more than £10 for a length of waste pipe, a trap and a better soil pipe cap with a proper seal. As it stands i'm doubtful the install meets water regs.

Hopefully there will be enough clearance behind the machine to fit it!

I got them from B&Q, think they were about £7 per pack (sq metre), but there were a few packs of broken ones and i managed to get enough to do what i did, and have 3 spare whole ones for £4!!!

Have got a little u-shaped bit of plastic near the top of the waste, unfortunately i can't look in the manual as i mentioned above it was given to us.

I did have a look in Focus when i bought the other stuff but couldn't see anything suitable. Surely if it goes in the Soil pipe it doesn't matter?

This is what i mean to insert into the soil pipe:
    http://www.screwfix.com/prods/51416/Plumbing/Underground-Drainage/Universal-Waste-Adaptor

Then fit 40mm waste pipe to that vertically.

    Attach a 40mm S-trap: http://www.screwfix.com/prods/51596/Plumbing/Wastes-and-Traps/S-Trap-40mm

and then another piece of 40mm vertical pipe to that (which forms the standpipe)

Hook in the washing machine waste hose into the top of that.
