Yep - Sanchez is going to be his/ her name!
We are still considering what to do about the smoking problem, so it could be that we decide against it yet.....But im sure we probably wont!0 -
Sanchez! Wow ... I haven't heard of a parrot called that before ... I like it!! Very exotic indeed!
What you need is an outside shed that the person who smokes can go sit in when they fancy a puff!! *L* ... I tell ya, these birds cause us to change everything around for them!! It's worse than having kids!!0 -
I have 2 things to say
1. Ruby Moon- Take your short sighted comments and opinon and find a short cliff...Take a long run off the end of it.
2. The the OP, i have a senegal and the one thin g i recommend is DO NOT WEAR RED!!!!!!
I wore red around our first and he hated me, they domn't seem to like that colour much.
Also, i echo what the other poster said about having every member of the family handle your bird, as when we had the second, i hand fed him for a while and he is bonded to me, no one else can feed or clean him easily.
Have fun with your senegal. They are hilarious. Ours shouts at the cat, copies me when i sniff and copies fireworks.
His favourite treat is a small crust from my toast, minus any butter or any topping, just plain toasted bread. And the also enjoy small amounts of chicken when we have a sunday roast.0 -
*LOL* everyone shrieks "cannibal!!!" when people say they feed their parrots chicken ... !! My vet told me it should only ever be boiled chicken though and never roast but I haven't tried Elvis with any yet!
It's funny but my African Grey hates brown ... I have a few brown coloured shirts and if I wear one then he won't come near me and looks visibly upset. I usually put them on without thinking and end up having to race upstairs to change again!!
Obviously they have some kind of memory of a bad or worrying experience associated with certain colours ...
*L* not sure I would fancy hearing fireworks all year round! That's one thing people don't realise .. a parrot only has to hear a sound ONCE to learn it. They might mumble it a bit for a day or two before they get it spot on.
You don't half learn to be quick grabbing the tv remote though when any really loud sirens or explosions come on, so the birds don't hear it and pick it up!!!
They come out with a lot of things they hear ... not necessarily things you repeat over and over to them ... all swearing is banned in our house and any noisy films must be watched on the telly upstairs!!
What you've got to remember is that parrots are show offs and when they learn a new word or noise you might hear it repeated over and over ... and over ... and over (until they get tired of it!) ... so make sure any noises they hear are ones you can cope with listening to repeatedly!!0 -
Why do you in near enough every post in the Pets and Pet Care forum always have to snap your opinion across???? She IS getting a parrot, do you think splurging crap in a post will stop it from happening? 1 person is not going to stop the market of caged birds love. Alot of people have caged birds all round the world, personally I don't like birds in cages or anything in cages but that's my opinion and i have kept it to my self in all posts that involve animals in cages, it happens!!! Can't you just be nice in a post and offer some advice rather than go into posts and have a slanging match with everyone?!:mad::mad:
However, there are a few people who are not able to accept critisism of any kind and as such they get 'angry' when they post a response to me.
It is their perogative to do so but could you please not confuse others starting "slanging matches" with my written critisism?
Also, it looks as though you are prone to hyperbole and easily miss posts that are both constructive and friendly. Selective towards your argument I should think but unfair none the less.0 -

Shouts? Shouts what? Is he a good talker? Iv heard they can talk, but not very well???
I cant wait, aslong as the missus goes along with it :T0 -
*LOL* .... just you wait and see ... !!
They seem to find it easier to copy sounds and noises though but you will want to get a pair of ear plugs cos some of em can let out some pretty deafening screeches from time to time, though on the whole they are classed as being some of the quieter parrots!
Having said that, like with any parrot, if you put the time in to teach it, it WILL talk ... my best tip is to make a recording of you talking, saying nursery rhymes, maybe even singing ... and leave that playing when you go out ... it's surprising how quickly they can pick things up that way!
And remember, if they try to say something and it sounds muffled, it's cos they are hearing it that way so always speak slowly and precisely ... they seem to pick up "vowelly" sounds well ...and words or phrases that are high pitched or fun to say ... Elvis is trying to say "scooby dooby doooooooo" at the moment!
Some folk say just say one word over and over to them but a parrot will soon get bored to death with that (and so will you!) ... absolutely bombard them with all manner of songs, rhymes, whistles ... they will pick what they find easiest to do or say ... *S*0 -
So If I set up a tape with say 10 songs on & some talking - just leave it playing - over & over and he should pick some stuff up?
Il spend ages with him trying to teach him. Il also give him some anoying noises to copy too - maybe get one of them kids guns that lets off loads of different high pitch sounds ha ha!!0 -
He will definitely pick things up .. from the telly, from a tape ... from you and your family just talking normally on the telephone ... *LOL* .. some things you'll be happy about him picking up, others you won't!! Best thing is to give him ten minutes at a time ... then an hour later, talk to him for another ten minutes. Obviously, talk to him all the time, but go sit by his cage for the ten minutes and do some "intense" talking and saying rhymes etc ... it's a bit like training a dog .. little and often!
Elvis has started doing the beeps you hear at the start of the BBC News ... blooming infuriating because he does it loudly, but the good thing is that he only does it when he hears the News coming on, so they do associate noises with things and don't often just make the noise for the sake of it if you see what I mean!
You might also hear him giving you a two way conversation ... they're fun to hear! .. Elvis will do the phone ringing, then will say "Hello, can I help you?" ... then he will say, "Is he in?" then "No but I'll tell him" then we get "Ok thank you, buh bye then, buh bye" ... yet I haven't taught him any of that! It's astonishing how intelligent they are.
I know one guy who had an amazon parrot for years and in that time he had a pure white cat that he called Mephistopheles ... (what a name) ... his parrot would say the cat's name and call for it, saying "Hello Mephistopheles, come play," yet on the day the cat died the parrot stopped saying his name.
My friend had other cats, but the parrot never said Mephistopheles again ... till about 10 yrs later when my friend took in an injured cat .. a white one.
He found it on the side of the road and as he walked in the door carrying it, the parrot sparked up with, "Mephistopheles! Hello!" .... so believe me, they have some memory .. so make sure what you teach him, you will still be happy hearing 10 or 20 years down the line!!!
There was also one story I heard about a little girl who lived with her Grandad ... I think it was somewhere in South America .. anyway, there was an earthquake and their flat was turned to rubble. When the rescue workers were digging to find her, they managed to get her to talk to them by shouting and were surprised to hear her having a conversation with her Grandad ... he was saying, "Now then, what shall we do today?" ... and she was replying, saying what she would like to do, where she would like to go etc .. and he was saying, "Yes, okay then" and "We shall" in reply.
When they dug deeper, they found the body of her Grandad ... he had been dead some time ... but when they later found the little girl, she was in a small cupboard sheltering and just beside it, in his cage, was their pet parrot.
So the Grandad's voice had been the parrot all along ... he had been having this "conversation" with the little girl and obviously, keeping her talking had been the best thing so that she didn't lose consciousness ... but wouldn't you think after an earthquake the bird would have been so scared it wouldn't have uttered a sound?!
The rescue workers took quite a while to get them out, but they said that all the time they thought the little girl was with her Grandad, talking away .... !!0 -
