Where do you think they came from in the first place? Dagenham?
Get real. They are tropical birds and have no business being kept by 'wanting' people who cannot be satisfied with the pets we do have here.
Ah right, so because umpteen number of years ago some parrots were caught from the wild and brought to the UK you want to take it out on responsible parrot owners whose birds were bred and hand reared in the UK?
You really are an obtuse person aren't you? And my, that's not just a bee in your bonnet ... you've got a whole swarm!!!
Well *LOL* you keep posting your comments ... it's okay ... they won't bother us. We provide happy homes for our pets. Pets ... that's animals bred and hand reared in the UK, not caught on a hunting expedition to South America or South Africa.
We can all understand your concern about the trade in wild caught parrots and most of us share them too ... you made your point and we accepted that you had a different point of view, but why you have to carry on your little tirade is beyond us ... but do keep it up ... we might choose not to answer your illogical rantings but they do amuse us!0 -
To whoever said about the parrots coming from the wild etc etc, well originally dogs weren't pets either, where dya think things like guinea pigs come from? What about fish? I doubt much originated in the uk purely as a 'pet'0

Hiyah ... *S*
Have a google for smoking and parrots and see what links come up ... I'm a bit OCD on cleanliness, watching what to feed them, what they are in contact with, but smoking is definitely bad.
Most birds living with smokers will develop an illness related to the smoke and the majority of them don't live as long a life as they could have done.
It's pretty well documents, I'm afraid ... it's a slow toxin for them because they breathe in a concentrated amount of air.
Have a look at some of these links:

Have a read and see what you think .. at the end of the day it is your decision of course. There will be plenty of people who smoke and own pet birds but the risks of making the bird desperately ill with heart and lung problems means a lot of owners would never smoke in the house or allow anyone else to!
.. and yup, lostinrates ... I also bang a gong for people who smoke round children ... thankfully a lot of parents now will nip outside into the garden for a smoke and I say bravo to them!!0 -
Of course there are. There are 1000's of homes with owners who keep parrots who smoke.Yes but that person only seems to think about parrots in that way ....not sure why!

Now, the parrot is going to live a fairly long time but the smokers are slowly poisoning it, not realising that they are doing massive harm.
This is why parrots shouldn't be kept at all because even though most people think they are being responsible owners, there is generally something that they do that affects the birds. (too hot/cold/ too many smells/chemicals/toxins etc etc )
Think of is as the diabetic who eats chocolate. It doesn't kill them there and then but drastically affects them later in life.
This is what happens with parrots and hardly any of them live to the age that they should.
There is all the information out there to read from accredited sources without resorting to people on a chat forum. This really isn't the best place to get info from, no matter how clued up someone appears to be.0 -

Why do you in near enough every post in the Pets and Pet Care forum always have to snap your opinion across???? She IS getting a parrot, do you think splurging crap in a post will stop it from happening? 1 person is not going to stop the market of caged birds love. Alot of people have caged birds all round the world, personally I don't like birds in cages or anything in cages but that's my opinion and i have kept it to my self in all posts that involve animals in cages, it happens!!! Can't you just be nice in a post and offer some advice rather than go into posts and have a slanging match with everyone?!:mad::mad:Theres 2 types of horse owner, a person who owns a horse and a horsey person

Obviously not!!
I'm all for looking out for the welfare of animals & some kudos to "Ruby Moon" for that but there are ways of getting the message across & it's a skill he/she hasn't quite grasped.
I'm pretty certain that (very) aggressive criticism has a negative effect but then thats just me
Here's hoping that when he/she gets out of uni it will be with some "people" skills.... I'm always an optimist
Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -
No problemo Hughesy84 ... *LOL* ... I find it easy to ignore pests!!
I'm sure you will have a wonderful time with your bird when he or she comes home and kudos to you for wanting to know as much as you possibly can beforehand ... nobody can ever know everything about them but if we can try and find out as much as we can then it's better for our birds!
Btw, have you thought of a name yet? *S* ... I had some lined up before Elvis came but then when I saw him, none seemed to suit him! ... it's weird but just because they are the same species, they can all look slightly different ... *L*
Pssst, I'm a she too ... just incase there's any confusion!0
