Post 2001 V6 family saloons -high VED
Lots of post 2001 V6 family saloons(Mondeo , Vectra ,Rov75 etc have been hit by the VED bands - they will cost £245 pa from 2010- is there a danger these will become unsellable and worthless quite soon? -How off putting would it be to you? to stump up £245VED for 1)a car in general and 2)also for one that is 8 years old and worth less than 2k?

a lot of folk will be unaware of it until they go to tax it.
i think it depends on what the buyer wants the car for. if i was just using it as a family car i would buy the 4 cylinder petrol.
if i was towing my heavy trailer around i would look at the v6.
whats the price differance between both anyway? im guessing the 4 cylinder will be around £180 so for the sake of £65 i would say its worth it for the extra pulling power....work permit granted!0 -
so its 50-60 quid more than most other large cars, thats a tank of fuel, half a service or about 8p a day0

The higher VED charge is a very small part of the total cost of ownership (even when your doing low mileage), however it is one that the market in general appears to be very (read: over) sensitive too which has implications for resale potential.
Plenty of examples of people shelling out 1000's to avoid the extra £50 or what ever VED charge their car now has.
If you liked the car enough to drive it until it needs to go to the scrap yard I guess this is less of a concern.0 -
A humble 2.0 petrol Mondeo is 200 quid VED anyway.0

Same as a '96 3 litre twin turbo toyota supra.0

however on the flip side as a buyer you can often find these cars cheap as it puts some off
the same goes for small cars being expensive as all the young new drivers buy them and push the price up0 -
wouldnt put me off tbh
would just mean the cars become cheaper to but i suppose which means a better deal for usSealed pot challenger # 10

A great example at the "expensive car" end fo the scale is an Audi 6 V8 quattro vs. Audi 6 3.0TDi quattro.
Almost no A6 buyer wants the V8, they want the 3.0TDi. Consequently the V8 is cheaper by 1000's to buy and doesn't loose value all that quickly after that. The value fo the 3.0TDi starting so high plunges faster than the V8. End result is the V8 owned for a couple of years is sunstantially cheaper than the 3.0TDi and most of the used car buyers don't notice or measure this. The focus of attention is on mpg and VED charges.0 -
