You now have a cancelled policy on your record which you will have to disclose to all future insurers.

Go back to sw and try to sort this out and get the policy reinstated if you can. Also tell your new insurer about this cancellation if you haven't done so already.

My daughters car (VW Polo)was hit by a lorry whilst it was parked (she wasn't in the car, lorry driver drove away, incident was seen by another driver who left a note under her wiper with a contact no. and details of what happened) She was with Sheilas wheels, their recommended garage didn't seem able to fix the door properly and both garage and SW seemed to think it was okay that every couple of weeks the door lock would fall apart.

In the end she insisted her car went to a Volkswagen garage for repair, SW eventually agreed, the lock got fixed properly, she swore she would never use SW again even if they were the cheapest as the hassle and indifference they showed was not worth the cash saved.

On the insurance increase for claims. when her insurance was due for renewal, she put in the her details but omitted this incident as she thought as it wasn't her fault and she wasn't even near the car but in the house that it didn't have to be disclosed, I told her it didn't work that way and she would have to disclose it, the prices she was quoted rose by around £100, not fair but unfortunately the way it seems to work

Review Centre will have negative bias as DunstonH points out.

Have a look at these ratings from Defaqto and Which

Generally in life you get what you pay for and the pitfalls of choosing the cheapest insurer don't come to light until after you have parted with your cash.

Don't choose on price alone although I know this is difficult when insurance costs continue to rise.
Mr Straw described whiplash as "not so much an injury, more a profitable invention of the human imagination—undiagnosable except by third-rate doctors in the pay of the claims management companies or personal injury lawyers"

  • I have been with Sheila's Wheels for about 5 years. In another vehicle when reversing out from my mother's drive (being insured on my mother's insurance to use her car) I accidentally knocked into another car that was parked on the street immediately opposite. Her insurance (Swiftcover) paid the cost and her no claims discount adjusted accordingly.

However, when renewing MY insurance Shelia's Wheels wanted to charge me an extra £60 for the incident even though there was no cost to themselves. The way I understood no claims bonus is that for costs picked up elsewhere, the total cost of the insurance is less. Charging once on my mother's insurance where the claim was made is fair enough: it is what insurance is for. Charging me AGAIN for the SAME incident is unfair. This would have pushed the total annual cost to just over £300.

Yet, for £250 with More Than, whilst acknowledging the incident, I was only charged £200 for the year, with an extra £50 for RAC home start / roadside breakdown cover!

Seems Sheila's Wheels seem to be all lovely and cheap - if anything happens anywhere be prepared to switch insurers next year - this is how they make their money! Even though they say they have semi-protected no claims discount, they bump other charges up anyway and recoup their money. My argument is this is false advertising on their no claims bonus.

You caused the damage and are seen as a greater risk than before, thus they have altered your premium (your NCD won't have been affected by your fault claim as a named driver).

You probably would have saved over the years had you shopped around at each renewal!

I would warn anyone NOT to choose Shelia's Wheels (or Esure as they are part of the same group) for car insurance. The customer service in my experience has been terrible, and they are happy and more than willing to try and setting with other insurance companies rather than help their customer.

I was in a crash last year where a car from the lane to the right of me moved in to my lane without indicating and crashed in to the side of me.

I had a witness there, and I passed their details to Shelia's Wheels. They failed to contact the witness for a statement and said they'd tried to no avail. I tried once and got through straight away.

They settled the claim at 50/50 in the end as that was the "easiest thing to do".

I would not recommend Sheila's Wheels or Esure to anybody. Like many have said, yes the process of signing up and getting covered is straight forward and yes they tend to come out cheaper, but the customer service stops there.
I was involved in an accident in January 2016, no fault of mine other than the misfortune of having crossed paths with this person. I was essentially overtaken (illegally) and then the driver slammed on their brakes, I tried to steer away but nothing I could do to avoid and resulted in me going in to their vehicle. I reported this incident to the police as the driver was driving dangerously & was making wild accusations. I informed my insurers & was immediately met with "hmm yeah it's usually the person who goes in to the others fault"... So clearly no consideration for the situation I was in.
I had an eye witness who saw it all, and despite all of this, sheilas'd wheels forced me to claim and have my car repaired, because I was told then they would make the 3rd party insurers liable. I was due for renewal in March. As a result I had to pay £150 excess for the repairs, I lost my NCB and my renewal quite shot up by £200+ than the previous year. I have o it received my car back now and the "lovely, empathic" customer services person at Sheila's informed me that the case will be closed. The other drivers story doesn't coincide with mine (shocking) and despite the independent eye witness I am still "responsible" for this accident. So I'm £350 out of pocket and absolutely livid. The other driver has not claimed (I see this driver around all the time, her car has been fixed and she's happy on her way) however I am the one who is left out of pocket, stressed, upset and absolutely baffled by how paying for insurance and being a sensible driver, literally means sweet eff all. Sheila's wheels could not care less! They had no interest in keeping me as a customer when it came to my renewal, the price was significantly more than previously, and the only time they corresponded with me was to send me renewal reminders. Other ways I have had to chase them along the way regarding this incident. They sound utterly bored and void of an compassion for their customers. I am so disappointed with their version of customer service, I was told I HAD to claim through them and esentially they have turned around and said "yeah it's closed sorry".
I mean if going for the cheapest insurer is your priority then go for it.. But you get zero support post an accident. Thieves.

They have to weigh up the cost of action and chances of success vs the cost of the accident to them. This can lead to situations that you may consider really unfair but are just a commercial reality.

If it was your money, would you spend £5000 on action that has a 25% chance of winning and getting your £1000 repair covered?

That is the sort of decision (in crude/simple terms) that the insurer is having to make.

That may very well the 'reality' and yes it is a massive pill to swallow when you pay for insurance, you do everything you should to abide by laws etc, only to be essentially told 'tough !!!!' when you're not at fault. That is my biggest qualm with Sheila's Wheels, their attitude stinks, and their communication with the customer is terrible (unless of course they want your money, e.g. happy to renew with no permission or go-ahead). In regards to the financial decisions the insures may face, that interests me very little; i was strongly advised (and I use that work loosely) to claim! Claim for repairs etc.. I'm sure they'll recover their costs of it all won't they. It's okay if its just the silly old customer who pays through the nose.... I'll reiterate it again, anyone looking to insure with Esure/Sheila's.. DON'T!

I sympathise but it sounds like exactly what every other insurer on the planet would do.
If you didn't want to claim or wanted to DIY and claim from the 3rd party direct then you should have stuck to your guns and done that. I sympathise but I don't think you can blame them for your choice, I'm sure they never would gave guaranteed recovery from a 3rd party so you knew the risks.
Life's not fair and I sympathise but you need to accept responsibility for your choices because as you say they only advised and didn't guarantee.
