mushroom kits

Candy - I suspect your kit will probably have dried out by now and be fairly useless, but it's always worth mist spraying it to moisten it up if you've got a coolish dark place in which to put it.0

I recall seeing a which survey on the box kits which suggested they were pretty much useless and this is certainly my experience.
The more expensive dowel type plugs or complete logs you can buy do work, but they are expensive and you do have to follow the instructions very carefully.0 -
have to say both times i tried the kits i got LOADS of mushrooms., u do have to follow the instructions to the letter tho
i would say give it a go, why not as badger says not going to cost u anything except timeWhen you know better you do better0 -
If you have any mushroom farms nearby try asking them if they have any spent growing material. I know a new build which had this used for borders, and had a massive crop for one year.Freedom is the freedom to say that 2+2 = 4 (George Orwell, 1984).

so ok there seem to be a lot of misses with mushroom kits, and a few hits.
I'm keen to to the mushroom thing but not keen on spending on a kit, but don't believe it is rocket science to put together my own
I guess the container is fairly easy to get hold off, it'd just be a tray with lid and ventilation holes
soil/compost etc - any advice on what type would be best?
OK here's where i'm stuck, can I just get some mushrooms (from supermarket) and plant them :rotfl: - i guess it can't be that easy, any advice where i get some mushroom seeds/spores/chicks/lavae whatever mushrooms grow from?
thanks
