Want to give mushroom kits a bash but am a bit unsure. I know its late in the year, but many indoor kits and winter mushroom pots are being advertised on various sites. If anyone has tried them can you tell me, do they work?, do they need somewhere warm or cool? Are they good value or do you just get two mushrooms for twelve quid? Anyone who has bought one for a bargain price will also be gratefully listened to!! Cheers

In my experience they are really for novelty value only. You get more than two mushrooms - but nothing like enough to justify the cost!0 -
I picked up a kit that was going cheaply because it was getting near its sell-by date. I paid about 3 pounds for it. After I'd got over the difficulty of where to site it (it ended up in the shower room!) it produced mushrooms quite merrily. It was fascinating to watch but the mushrooms were nothing to shout about. When it was all spent, I threw it on the compost .....
....which left me with a very useful and sturdy polystyrene lidded box. That box has been one of the best three pounds I've ever spent. I use it for all sorts of things. Funny old world, isn't it?0 -
i have had them in the past and have produced pounds of mushrooms from them, i usually buy them when they are reduced tho rather than at full price. mine come from focus (family works there so get discount too)
i usually put them in the airing cupboard to get them going and then they go somewhere cooler... u have to keep spraying them otherwise they stop croppingWhen you know better you do better0 -
found a cheaper kit, avoiding the extortionate £12 and £20 online ones thanks to the kind tips of all here.
Am now treating it as an experiment, having started them off in the airing cupboard, wish me luck.....0 -

Bought some mushroom plugs last year - followed instructions to the letter - useless - not a single room in sight!
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

I bought a kit many years ago in the eager anticipation of having an endless supply of mushrooms. I also followed the instructions to the letter and didn't get a single mushroom. Wouldn't bother again.0
