Lack of Manners

Is it me or is there total lack of manners out there in todays world.

The reason I ask this is today we where due workman at 8.30am to do a job. My husband hung around to have a quick chat with them when they arrived. At 8.55am my husband rang them as no sign of them. To be told oh we can't come today and when husband said he was an hour late for work. He was told well you don't have to be there for us.

No sorry and no pro-active phone call this morning or last night to say we are really sorry but because of X we can't make it today.

It is not like it is a favour we are paying them to do a job that we just can't do ourselves and before anyone ask it is a drop curb and who you pick has to come off a list supplied by the council.

I told my husband I would have told them to stuff it where the sun don't shine. It has not really stopped me doing anything today. But to me it would have been manners to let us know that they could not come.

Prehaps I just have too high a standard when it comes to things like that.

Yours

Calley

That sounds like workmen for ya! Dont think many of them have the courtesy to call to let you know they will be late or not to turn up! You hear of so many people taking the day or part of the day off work to wait in for a workman only for them not to turn up!

I dont think you have that higher standard - I am the same, if someone says that they will be there on such a day to do something then I expect them on that day!

  • ...My neighbour waited a year for a particular firm of builders to build his extension..I saw why when they turned up...POLISH

They were all very pleasant and polite, brought there own portaloo...Always turned up on the dot, worked very hard and kept the radio down..They even knocked on my door on a few occasions to apologise for the noise (and I wasn't even paying them!)...Left the place spotlessly clean..

Very rare to get any home grown lot with manners like this!

IF you've not paid in advance, you could always knock something off the bill for inconvenience - I have a couple of times and they were shocked.

If they've off a council-approved list it may be worth letting the Council know - don't know if they'd actually do anything about it though.

Trouble is that sometimes builders plumbers and the like are in such demand that they book too much work and their attitude is that you will wait if you really want the work done , and be gratefull when they turn up 3 wks late ......:rotfl: Its very annoying but if they honestly told you they could not do the job for weeks and weeks you would probabley go elsewhere, if you could find someone.... don't know what the answer is though,.....

These companies are licenced by the local council and you cannot use any that are not for a dropped curb. They have to produce work to a set standard and will be struck off the council approved list if they don't.

It is worth contacting the council concerned in writing as they may do something if this is a regular complaint.

In my area there are at least 2 companies approved for this, so it would be worth asking the council for the name of any others that can do the work. I was sent an information pack that included the names of the approved companies.

Yeah, the getting on, and staying on these lists works on an antiquated system known as 'backhanders' or in some area's it is known as a 'bung'. It's a great training ground for those ambitious council officials who hope that one day their career ladder will reach as far as the House of Commons.

All I know is that when i've been to France and walked into a shop i've almost been blown out of the door by the loud, warm, welcoming, booming bonjour monsiour. Not to mention all the please, thank yous and goodbyes that follow.

There's a strikingly noticeable difference when you come back to the UK and just get a grunt in our shops, that's if you're lucky enough for them not to be maintaining a simultaneous conversation with a workmate while they serve you.

For some people today it's seen as cooler to be rude and nonchalant.

It's rare today to now find friendly shop staff or companies who go that extra mile to deliver good service.

I guess it's all to do with making money. Shops recruit younger staff and do not invest in proper training or incentive schemes so these staff just aren't motivated to want to make your expereince better. We still go to the shop and spend money there so the big bosses need not change a thing.

Call centres abroad, automated call handling and email contact addresses that no-one ever, ever answers. These are all the current state of play for the UK retail sector. Makes you wonder why they can't make a profit.
