Who really killed it, my opinion is that it was the sheer greed of some customers - had everyone stuck to something small like 10% against total spend then the policy may well still have been here today.
Martin is in a better position than most to negotiate a more sensible return with Tesco - instead of criticising him, why not ask for his help.0 -

i found using coupons through finding ways to save and cut back-searching the internet, i found it because i needed to find a way.
By mouthing off on tv and constantly splashing it all over emails, people who did not 'need' to find a way to cut back exploited the coupon policy and greed took over.
yes you've bigged yourself up and got your self on to tv-more money for you- you won't go without. but many shall now. i hope you got more tv slots and sleep well at night.
How can you seriously say that those who suddenly became aware and exploited the policy greedily were not in need? Even those buying Tv's may have been saving pennies in a jar for months for all you know.
Personally I think 37.5% of coupons to spend is greedy.
Think about it, all those coupons are a mixture 10p, 25p, 30p, 35p, 40p, 50p, 75p & 80p - do you think that the person behind you in the queue does not realise that Tesco were taking coupons for products you had not bought?0 -
for goodness sake suck it up and go to a different shopBlackpool_Saver is female, and does not live in Blackpool0

People high up within tescos ranks have said(not publicaly)that is as a DIRECT result of the tv appearance as it drew too much attention to it.
House of Fraser have also withdrawn their pdf before time0 -
My God! I thought I had seen some nasty pieces of work on MSE before but you "Couponers" really take the biscuit!
You had a nice little earner for quite a while, talk about spiteful little tantrums when it finally ends! Course, it is all Martins fault for sharing the details with others not keeping it just to your exclusive little club - couldn't possibly be because there are those who have massively abused the system for ages could it;).
How about just saying "thank you" to Tescos for all the years they have allowed you to abuse the manufacturers, and just sucking up the dissapointment:D.
My mother always taught me that good things always have to come to an end - perhaps we need to teach that more nowadays!!!!
This thread has reminded me totally of the sickening advert for the mobile phone on TV, the one that goes on and on about demanding more and not being patient, etc, etc. Totally epitomises ALL that is wrong with our society in general: as do the uncalled for and self-ridden comments on this thread!"there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0 -
For some reason reading this thread made me think of this ad...

I have been reading this thread and just wanted to post my views. I don't think there's any need for nastiness on either side - either as in the above posts with nastiness to couponers or the other way. Using coupons or not was a personal choice and not something anyone had to do. I can see Martin's point that it should not be only the exclusive few who know about the policy BUT the very nature of couponing meant that once everyone knew about it, inevitably it was going to get abused and then withdrawn. It just was not sustainable on a large scale, no blame to T, they had to act quickly. My family did use couponing on a weekly basis, it saved us between £20 and £30 per week on our shop and when we went last night, boy, did we miss it! We spent over £50! I had always been honest and never abused the system, but it allowed us to get treats for the kids, meat and things like coffee. At the moment with redundancy etc, we are just about living on the bread line and really struggling so this change in the policy is a huge, huge blow to us. It will mean no treats and we will all be missing out on things that we have been able to afford previously solely because of couponing. And for those who said couponing was an easy option but have never done it, I really believe that only those really desperate and very hard up will do it on a regular basis as you lose some of your dignity standing up to SAs who try to be awkward when all along you are just following the store's own policy. It was sometimes embarrassing but it didn't matter as my family benefited. So, please no more nastiness to couponers as above, yes perhaps you didn't agree with couponing but it's a personal choice and there's no need to hit out. Surely people can understand that those who did rely on it found it a lifeline and surely can understand that people are devastated that it's gone - as was completely inevitable following the TV appearance.
Thanks for reading.MAY THE ODDS BE EVER IN YOUR FAVOUR0 -
How can we all save then? If we are 'all' saving then by definition we aren't saving!! We can only be saving if others are paying more elsewhere, otherwise there would be no point in MSE! And if EVERYONE saves then nobody saves. Think about it for a while!
Nope, sorry don't understand your logic, I'll think about it for a while! But I do suggest you read a lot more of Martin's articles and the rest of MSE to find out exactly all the ways you can save money.alittlebitofmagic wrote: »People high up within tescos ranks have said(not publicaly)that is as a DIRECT result of the tv appearance as it drew too much attention to it.

As I don't have the ear of Sir Terry I can't possibly confirm that but I think you'll find that talks between Pedigree and Tesco had a good deal more to do with it than Martin's appearance on GMTV but hey all those high up people need to have a scapegoat.
Yes House of Fraser withdrew their voucher, why, because people were abusing it by printing multiple copies and selling on Ebay etc.0 -

I'm quite familiar with the site, thank you :-)
To save money you have to be paying less than the 'normal' price. So if normal price is £100 and you are saving £20 then you are saving £20 over what some other people are paying or have paid (eg in a sale).
If everyone saves £20 all the time then I would suggest actually the normal price is £80 as nobody pays or has paid £100.
Therefore you are only saving if others have paid or are paying the higher price.
Therefore saying 'everyone' should save doesn't stack up as clearly in this case you can't have 'everyone' following what was Tesco national policy and using coupons to the full value of the shop, because more coupons would be redeemed than product bought.0 -
I think all everyone is asking for is an apology.. even in the smallest terms. But unfortunately people in their nature are very unapologetic even when they know they have a part in any wrongdoeing... by our nature our egos take over and we try to explain away or excuse ourselves.
It is too coincidental that the policy is pulled 2.5 days after your appearance. All your appearance did was probably make this gang or frauders alot of money. It didn't save the working jo much as most people would shop friday afternoon/weekend or another day of week and.. it has lost permanently people money.
The biased nature of the news report doesn't even mention that only 2 days prior you were professing the use of coupons as cash on live tv.
1. Nobody asked you to make it private
2. Nobody wants to be in an in-club
3. We all worked our bums off, learning, researching and testing coupons, sticking by the rules and all. We found this site or PTS and learned of coupons and their value... on our own. We didn't require our hands to be held. If someone needs help they can find a way out of their problem. DFWs probably used couponing to reduce their debts, or make ends meet for instance... because they had a desire/need for it... now its gone.
In the end you have so much power to screw things up (deals/glitches) that you yourself have not actually found out originally. I am sure people where using coupons at tesco before you or your team were even founded. These people have every right to blame you, partially or fully for this problem.
A mature individual would swallow hard and accept what they did wrong. But this is just like the icesave fiasco with you spouting 'Save save save' as 'information'.. which lead people to put their savings days and weeks before the icelandic banks collapse. That was a screw up too.
Its ok... sometimes we make mistakes... the thing is... if you dont recognise your mistakes and account for them... you never learn from them..you will keep making them again and again.0
