Hello you techno wizards out there

I am visiting the States, as of next week. I have been advised the least expensive way of using a PAYG phone out there is to get it unlocked and buy a new SIM card. Anyone any idea how to unlock this phone? Please?

I have a Nokia 6630 on 3 which despite their best efforts they seem unable to unlock as the code they give me doesn't work. Claim my phone is permanently tied to 3 and that is that. Is this a common problem?

P.S.
Initially they ignored the IMEI number I gave them and sent me a code for a different phone. I bought two phones on contract at the same time and they insist the SIMS are in the wrong phones even though everything came in same box! Tried the wrong code they sent me twice so presume I should have had 3 goes left.
